Sampson texts Hoosiers players

The first sign that Indiana's problems aren't over, but really just beginning, was a startling revelation Saturday night. Armon Bassett, one of many terrific players on a team in mid-scandal limbo, said he received a text message from an admirer after a tense victory over Northwestern. "He told me he loved me, he's happy for me and good win,'' Bassett said. The texter: Kelvin Sampson. Insert your punchline here about the serial cell-phone monster who can't help himself, but this is neither humorous nor encouraging for the immediate future of a potential Final Four team. Only a day after he was bought out as a repeat rules offender who shamed a legendary basketball program, Sampson still was associating with his former players via the very technological toys that doomed him. It begs the question of how close he'll remain with the Hoosiers as the tournament nears -- and how university officials and the NCAA will view such a bond as IU tries to avoid crippling long-term sanctions.

What a Joke, IU a legendary basketball program, this is the program that allow Bobby to remain a coach after saying if a woman is being rape she should just lay their and just take it. The sorry IU fans and lowlife program only cares about winning not woman.

It would be too easy to make a cell phone joke here. The man got fired/"resigned", let him atleast talk to the players he left. They're the ones who are going to be hurt the most out of this.

It's gotta be like crack to him ...

This should be a good day for humorous posts on this thread.

Why would this kid even report it,,,, why did this make the news. Obviously not all the players ahve his back if they are going to leak this info.

former coach texts congratulations to a player after a win -- big deal. hardly a great scandal or outcome-affecting action.

Is it me or does Kelvin Sampson look like a young Manuel Noriega?

February 25, 2008  12:23 PM ET

Sampson. has to realize at some point that he is done. It is over for him. Leave the kids alone. They should be angry with him for the position he put them and the University in. Just go away....I almost think the U. should take hime to court for the damage he has done....Any college that hires this guy deserves what ever they get....

February 25, 2008  01:33 PM ET

puttin a cell phone in front of him is like puttin a twinkie in front of mangino, you just know they can walk away from it.....

February 25, 2008  01:38 PM ET

So..now...texting his former players is an NCAA infraction? Might be a distraction to the new coach, but hardly a war crime.

February 25, 2008  01:53 PM ET

read section 4 (b) of his seperation agreement (avail here - http://blogs.heraldtimesonline.com/iusp/wp-content/uploads/2008/02/0225_sa mpsonseparationagreement-1.pdf ) did he violate that clause by txting the players?

February 25, 2008  03:33 PM ET

As I sit here reading this and posting a comment, I am saddened that a text message (i send atleast 10 a day) not only cost this man his job, it embarrased a great universtiy. In this case, the smoking gun was a cell phone and an unsuspecting technology user got shot. let it go. and why cant you send someone a text?

February 25, 2008  03:43 PM ET

Is that legal?

February 25, 2008  04:23 PM ET

What's so wrong with sending the kid a text message AFTER he's no longer a coach?
But I agree with the whole legendary program thing. WTF is up with that?
Maybe it's just b/c Im a L'Ville fan.

February 25, 2008  04:24 PM ET

sooner girl tho, that **** was deep. And hilarious.

February 25, 2008  04:31 PM ET

How is this a story...A ex-coach communicating congrats and caring for a former player...despite the coach going through a significant low point in his coaching career. Give me a break!!!!!

February 25, 2008  04:57 PM ET

So? He's not a coach right now, he can do whatever he wants.

That being said, I'm glad he's out.

February 25, 2008  06:05 PM ET

"Is that legal?"

Yes, it's legal. He doesn't have to worry about how it looks, because there's no way he's going to get another coaching job.
