07:43 AM ET 01.28 | Congratulations are in order for the Senators, who appear to be set for more than a decade of broadcast-rights money. League sources told the Ottawa Sun the Senators are just dotting the i's and crossing the t's and the club is close to announcing a historical, long-term deal for the local television and radio rights. ... The competition between TSN and Sportsnet for Ottawa's rights heated up after Rogers signed a 12-year, $5.2 billion agreement to take over the national broadcasts. A report out of Montreal indicated RDS is paying a whopping $68 million per-year for the rights to 60 games and no playoffs. The Senators local rights won't be worth as much but sources say the price paid will increase significantly.

They are because TSN is doing everything they can to still have a NHL presence. They might not have the national package anymore but if they can get most of the locals (including the Leafs' local package which expires next year I think) they can still be considered Canada's "home for hockey" to an extent. It's pretty smart, since with the local deals they would have almost as many Canadian team games as Sportsnet (even if it isn't on a national level) and those will always draw more viewers than two American teams going at it.

There goes DL talking packages again

LOL! The Sens sure had more than their fair share of those. One gem by the name of Alexandre Daigle comes to mind.

I sure hope it works for them also. They have already started pushing more and more dreaded NBA coverage into the morning Sportcentre hour and my tolerance for that garbage is bottomed out. The other day they actually showed NBA highlights(term used with disgust) before showing the highlights of 2 NHL games played the same night....with Canadian Teams in them. Not gonna fly in Canada outside of Toronto.
