Patriots have been after Larry Fitz

07:25 AM ET 01.29 | Another offseason brings with it familiar elements in New England. Irritation over Bill Belichick shutting out the media at the NFL Combine. Draft day trades galore. Rumors about deals for Larry Fitzgerald. Speculation about Fitzgerald has been rife for year, but I've never seen any smoke. Or even smelled it. And the finances involved rarely made it seem reasonable. But Tuesday in New York, a source told me that last offseason the Patriots were indeed interested in acquiring Fitzgerald and sent out feelers to gauge the feasibility. The source didn't share the timing of the interest -- whether it came before or after Aaron Hernandez was arrested for murder, released and jailed is germane -- or the level to which talks proceeded. But the source is very well-placed.

Given the sorry state of the receiving corps and the window closing tighter on Brady, they should make another run at him.

Fitz has deserved better, since he came in the league.

If the Cards get Big Ben, Larry should stick around and go to # 49.

That would definitely breath some new life into his career. He's a class act and I think he'll speak at media day.

Why wouldn't they go after him. The Pats need to put a star like that on their side. Look what a geriatric Randy Moss did for them.

From what we know of his personality and work ethic, he would be a perfect fit in New England.

He should have enough left in the tank for what they need.

The problem is the Patriots have not been able to identify and draft a wide receiver worth diddly for ten years plus. They tried, but fell on their face every time.

The list gives me heartburn - Taylor Price (third round, 2010), Brandon Tate (third round, 2009), Chad Jackson (second round, 2006) and Bethel Johnson (second round, 2003). With the Jackson and Johnson selections the Patriots aggressively traded up to secure them. UGH!!!

I remember a great player having to leave Boston to get a championship (Ray Bourque). It would seem appropriate for another to go to the Boston area in order to win one.

Quite the list. Makes little sense. They traded down and stock piled picks for years. You would think you just plain get lucky once in a while. Add in Brady as the QB and a passer friendly system and any average WR should have been able to do well.

Pats. I know its not "your way." But owe it to Tom Brady to get him some help. I understand you think its great you have no-name WR's playing on your team, but Brady isn't going to be around for another 10 years. Use the time you have left with him to make a push for a title, not worry about what the salary cap will be like in 5 years...

Fine him.

This is one of the things I hate about the NFL. Most players don't stay in one place long enough for the fans to connect with them. Fitz is the exception ... but now it seems he too will move along and Cards fans will get kicked in the stomach.

The NFL is a glorified fantasy league with players who move from team to team. Their attitude of "I gotta get paid" is watering down the product.

Say whatever negative things you want about Josh McDaniels (And I say many negative things about him as a head coach), he drafted both Eric Decker and Demaryius Thomas for Denver.

Ok. While we're at it, can they fine JJ for talking to the media?
