Phillies in on Burnett

07:33 AM ET 01.29 | Might veteran righty A.J. Burnett break Pittsburgh's heart by going elsewhere? [That Burnett] intends to pitch in 2014 will not send shockwaves through the industry because many top free-agent pitchers remain unsigned. But Burnett comes with special interest to the Phillies, who have liked the 37-year-old pitcher in the past and possess a need for a mid-rotation starter. Burnett will test the market, according to a Pittsburgh Tribune-Review report. ... If signed by the Phillies, he would slot behind Cole Hamels and Cliff Lee to strengthen a rotation shrouded in mystery. There are connections between the Phillies and Burnett. His agent is Darek Braunecker, the same man who represents Lee. Burnett is neighbors and close family friends with Phillies assistant general manager Scott Proefrock.

A.J. Burnett and top free agent pitchers mentioned in the same story is laughable

Adding a 37 year old pitcher to an aging roster will undoubtedly inject new life into the Phillies.

3.30 ERA, a 1.21 WHIP, 191 innings and 209 strikeouts. I think I just found something posted here that's more laughable than this t&R story. (^)

Those are nice numbers but if you consider AJ's marginal ERA+ of 107 and WAR of 1.7, he's no world beater. Granted, those numbers will land him in almost any rotation.

I guess he didn't get the memo about Halladay retiring.

Can anyone else recall a winter where there were so many pitchers unsigned? Matt Garza especially was a surprise till he signed with the Brewers

I cannot either. The Tanaka drama really put the starting pitcher market on hold.

I like how Sherman gave the "I've never made it rain in a strip club." answer, as opposed to the "I've never been in a strip club."

QUOTE(#19):

Everyone was waiting on Tanaka. I wouldn't expect the remaining FA pitchers to be out there much longer.

I think most teams viewed these guys as average at best. No real difference makers. If they were any good they would have been gone by now.
