Playoff run hurt Del Rio in USC search

07:34 AM ET 01.29 | Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio has enough on his plate these days. [Del Rio] faces a challenge this week as he prepares for Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, power running back Marshawn Lynch and the expected return of receiver Percy Harvin. At least he needn't be concerned about USC's recruiting class. Del Rio, the former USC All-American linebacker, was interviewed by Athletic Director Pat Haden as a possible replacement for fired coach Lane Kiffin. Haden ultimately hired Steve Sarkisian. ... Haden has not commented publicly on where Del Rio or any candidate stood on USC's wish list during its coaching search. But the possibility that Del Rio could be working deep into the NFL playoffs -- and not on campus or on the road recruiting -- was regarded as a major concern.

If the Broncos win the Super Bowl and his defense contains the Seahawks offense, he'll have plenty of opportunities to be a Head Coach in the very near future. And, his 'asking price' will most certainly go up.

And...he will be able to work some other place than that screwed up environment. I wonder if they can ever hire an athletic director that has a clue on how to run a program.

I'm still wondering why they didn't hire Orgeron...

Nonsense. The only thing that keeps Del Rio from being a guy you would wait for to be your HC is a very mediocre 68???71 NFL HC record with 2 play off appearances in 9 years as a pro. couple that with the fact he has never had to recruit at the college level and it never was a sure dunk. Not at all.

The same could be said of Pete Carroll before he went to USC.

The ruin game did him in. Losing is ok, losing to your biggest rival because you were thoroughly out coached??? Hard to recover from that.

doesn't matter, Del Rio wasn't the guy. He was just entertaining the process. It was SS job from the beginning.

Sark was a relatively safe hire. USC guy, already recruiting the coast, modest win record. Don't expect any miracles, though, Trojan fans.

Unfortunately I have to agree with you. But I didn't expect much from Pete Carroll when he was hired either and that went okay (for the most part).

Agree, credentials as a recruiter are fundamental for a HC in the top tier of CFB.

But he found a way to make U$C pay.

Jack Del Rio destroyed Jacksonville and ruided his career as another head coach in the NFL.

Or, did Jacksonville destroy him?
