07:40 AM ET 01.29 | With the trade deadline coming up so quickly after the Olympic break and Sochi on the nearing horizon, trade chatter is picking up. One player whose name I would have never predicted to even possibly be in the mix before the season is that of New York Rangers captain Ryan Callahan. But he's a pending UFA July 1 and so far contract talks have not gone well at all, a source told ESPN.com Tuesday. All of which led to some rumblings that the Rangers are exploring the trade market in case talks don't produce a contract extension before the March 5 trade deadline. ... You can imagine the reaction when Rangers GM Glen Sather called some teams over the past week to inform them that Callahan might be available. "That's a pretty big name," one Western Conference source said.

He would be a massive pickup for any team. But I'd want to sign him if I'm going to give anything up for him.

I do not know Callahan's game well enough to assess. Just looking at stats, I do not see the appeal here.

For his career: 124 goals, 243 points, +/- is 6, 151 PIM. Meh.

Oh wait, my bad. Those are the career stats for Devin Setoguchi, a player rumoured yesterday to be part of the WPG firesale. No one got excited about him, so lets take a look at Callahan's career numbers

130 goals, 249 points, =/- is 0, 266 PIM.

Based on stats along, Callahan and Setoguchi are the same guy.

So what is the appeal in Callahan?

agree, but he most likely wants Clarkson money. For this reason alone I wont fault Sather; his production is falling off and the injuries have been piling up.

His two-way game and leadership capabilities are quite valuable. Then again, that's what they said about Clarkson.I hate hockey.

You really have to stop listening to Nick Kypreos...

Not in the same class. Callahan's fearless and his leadership qualities are second to none. Setoguchi might score you some goals but .... so can Danny Heatley.

I agree with this, much as I like cally as a player.
But if he were to be traded for the deadline, Sather will need an armed escort in and out every day. cally has the same status to rangers' fans as Graves did

No love for Nazem the Dream? Second goal was mighty nifty...

Also gonna throw this out there, Celine is playing some mighty fine hockey as of late. It's funny what can happen when you use a defenceman in a role he is meant to play, rather than having him trying to do things he's terrible at doing. Picking up Gleason has worked out great so far.

LOL - I gave you one now don't get pushy. And I'm guessing you were chasing snow bunnies when they played Dallas?

Woah.....not in my book, not even close.

QUOTE(#15):

Bobby Mac had a few good points last night on this. Nobody sees the Rangers right now as a Cup contender. Sure, making the playoffs, who knows what can happen. But if Sather can get a decent return on Callahan, have the cap space and guys who in two years can be solid contributors, it just makes sense. Also, keeping Girardi looks much more likely right now.Of course, that Del Zotto trade still looks like caca to me.

absolutely agree. I also see your point about Girardi, but the Klein trade makes him more expendable. He is going to want a raise, potentially a big one, but he is not the same d-man one on one as he was in Torts' system. He gets burned, and badly some nights....problem becomes who wants him? If the opportunity arises, Flip him!

I wish him nothing but luck. Problem with the Hockey Gods these days is everyone gets annointed way too quickly esp. in the circles of the Garden Mngmnt. This kids career and failure in NY is all on the team management and the way they handled his situation. I thought he was good but not the expectation of a puck moving, outlet passing and skater like a Sergei Zubov type that he was being compared to. He got the green light and hand some good seasons and chances with Torts; then he hit a rough patch and Sather soured and then publicly shopped him. Not to mention when in the line-up being paired with two other "special projects" who were struglling as well. Kid is barely 23
