GM stars of the offseason

07:29 AM ET 01.31 | In terms of sheer buying power force, Yankees GM Brian Cashman made the biggest splash this offseason, spending more than $440 million on Jacoby Ellsbury, Carlos Beltran, Brian McCann and Masahiro Tanaka. After trading for Prince Fielder and signing Shin-Shoo Choo, Texas Rangers GM Jon Daniels probably made the second loudest noise. However, if history has taught baseball GMs anything, teams that make the biggest moves rarely end up winning the World Series. Just ask Los Angeles Angels GM Jerry Dipoto. ... So while Cashman and Daniels made big splashes, they weren't the general manager stars of the offseason. That title belongs to a pair of small-market geniuses: the Oakland Athletics' Billy Beane and the Tampa Bay Rays' Andrew Friedman.

Billy Beane is my nominee. He still knows how to rebuild a bullpen at reasonable cost like nobody's business

That's because he has Jonah Hill telling him to go after....................

Slim pickings this morning, thread-wise.

Not one mention of Rick Hahn. He had a good off season.

There's a great thread down the hall about how Todd Helton wants to sniff Peyton Manning's ballbag.

I don't know how I missed it.

Signing Ellsbury to a 7 year $153 mio contract with an option to $169 automatically disqualifies Cashman as GM star of the offseason.

I nominate Atro SYB. He's the reigning DLFL Champion. He's got a super-duper theory about contract years. Sure, he's afraid of all the Chinamen reporters in Seattle, but the fact is, he's just so damn dreamy!

Someone's got a mancrush!

I've liked for the most part what the Cards have done this offseason, big moves, not many but they did some things that I think will shore up the team...

I guess Josh Daniels too, because he paid way too much for Choo? At the end of the day it doesn't matter whether you build your roster with money or through trades if the team wins is all that matters. Your team makes offers and than takes them back because of made up failed physicals. Like I've said a million times worry about your own team.
