Vols working on elite recruiting class

07:31 AM ET 01.31 | Good news, Knoxville. Tennessee fans that have recently become accustomed to being home for the holidays can take solace in the stellar recruiting job being done by second-year Vols head coach Butch Jones and his staff. Despite a 5-7 campaign in 2013, Jones recorded a signature win over South Carolina, was able to get his players to buy into the type of program he wants to run and continued to put together what is shaping up to be one of the best 2014 classes in the country. When National Signing Day arrives next Wednesday, the Vols are positioned to bring in a class that will rank in the Top 10 nationally -- and likely closer to Top 5 depending on the scouting service. The class features a nice blend of offensive and defensive talent, led by the in-state duo of running back Jalen Hurd and safety Todd Kelly, Jr.

I don't anticipate any real surprises on NSD. The only wild card was Adoree Jackson but when he went from 6 schools to 4, the Vols got the axe. I think Gavin Bryant may be wavering in his commitment and Sawyer, a former Vandy commit is choosing between UTK and Ole Mess but other than that I expect a very quiet NSD for the Vols.

There is some talk of blue shirting a few kids like the Berry brothers who technically were never recruited or took official visits but I'll leave the detail work of getting 34 kids on campus up to Butch.

Lord, please bring the Vols a QB. Amen.

I see they have 34 commits; you have all 2*'s and be a top 10 with that many

One thing, with Vandy losing their coach, makes MTSU number one, or would it be Memphis, for this next year.

I'm not a fan of oversigning. I track my team's recruiting, and I've noticed Dantonio has gone from signing just enough kids to get to 85, to signing enough kids to get to the B1G "off-season" limit of 88 (I think that's the limit between NSD and August 1). I am tracking the Spartans' roster by class eligibility and positions and have made some "educated guesses" as to who will get processed out in order to reach the 85 limit.

It's called the Mack Brown syndrome. Get to 84 quickly and mail it in, saving 1 slot for a late signing/flip. That way you can sit around and sip drinks prior to NSD and not worry about dealing with the <inept> NCAA compliance office.

Honesly ... Mack was incredibly slow to adopt more modern methods other teams were exploiting in order to achieve success. Only at the end did he hire a director of player personnel ... and he rarely went after more players at positions where the available slots were already spoken for ... stuff like that.
