Michael Young: 2011 Rangers better than Cardinals

09:38 AM ET 02.01 | The time finally arrived late Friday afternoon when the media had no more questions for Michael Young, and all that was left before he could exit stage left into baseball retirement was to again wear his old Texas Rangers jersey. The Rangers went to the World Series again in 2011, losing in seven games to St. Louis. That memory stings Young the most, though he believes the lesser team was crowned champion. ???I mean no disrespect by it, but we were the better team,??? Young said. ???Flat out. I can say that now that I???m retired.???

On paper, he is correct. On the field? Not so much.

Sad nostalgia from a retiring guy--"woulda, coulda, shoulda".
Let go, guy, and enjoy retirement.

On paper, he is correct. In RIGHT field? Not so much. FIXED!!!

Mr. Young left some parts out. It was an error by him in the third inning that allowed the cards to score. Does he not understand that if he does not make that error then that game never goes to extra innings and his team wins the World Series in six games?

He should have stated " We were the better team, but guys like me messed it all up."

Of course I am.

Young has no facts to back up such a silly statement. The Rangers were not even the best team in the AL that year. The Yankees won more regular season games than the Rangers and the Phillies led all of MLB with 102 wins. Heck, the Brewers won more games than the Rangers that year.

I guess a player is wired to feel that way but I did find that statement a little strong coming from him.

Regardless - it was my pleasure watching Michael Young ply his trade here for 13 years. He won't be a Hall of Famer in Cooperstown but he certainly will be here. Unlike some of the gasbags he played with (ARod, Texiera, C.J...) he played the game the right way on the field and conducted himself like a pro off the field. He was precisely the kind of player you want on your team when it came to work ethic, competition and leadership. And - he was as good a two-strike hitter as I've ever seen play.

He decided to retire and spend more time being a father. Once again - he gets it.

You must begin such statements as Young did by saying "I mean no disrespect by it. " Then you can say anything. Please ignore the fact that to make such statements IS disrespectful of the team that beat you.

February 1, 2014  10:40 AM ET

Sorry Mr. Young, but in a seven game series the winner IS the better team.

Now who can argue with that.....with credit to Gabby Johnson

I think we're all indebted to Gabby Johnson for clearly stating what needed to be said. I'm particulary glad that these lovely children were here today to hear that speech. Not only was it authentic frontier gibberish, it expressed a courage little seen in this day and age.
