Should Red Sox extend David Ortiz?

10:40 AM ET 02.02 | Two months ago, David Ortiz voiced his semiannual complaint about the length of his contract, bidding to add one more year to the two-year, $29 million deal that expires after this season. Since then, he has only repeated that request, most recently last Sunday night in a television interview in which he threatened to move on in 2015, even though he doesn't really want to play for another team. Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington has tried to moderate the situation, reiterating that the club would like to continue its relationship with Ortiz and will discuss an extension at the appropriate time. The Sox have no replacement for Ortiz's bat in the middle of the order and the payroll flexibility in 2015 to afford hiking his salary from the $15 million he will make this year. But before capitulating to Ortiz's request 10 months sooner than necessary, it's Cherington's job to assess the potential risks. After all, Ortiz is 38, and although he's coming off an October for the ages in which he ridiculously batted .688 in the World Series, he also is less than a year removed from a serious Achilles injury that cut short his 2012 and lingered long enough to sideline him for the first two weeks of last season. History isn't especially kind to sluggers in their late 30s either.

Of course they should extend him to the end of 2015. For all he's done for that organization, it's the least they can do.

Hell, I see it now.

I agree wholeheartedly. Give him a series of one-year deals.

It is a hard call for the Sox organization with the age of Ortiz after this season and knowing how stock plied your minor league system is with younger players.

It is unlikely another AL team will sign him at age 39 for anywhere near $15 million in '15.
Cherington can wait until the next fall and if Ortiz is still healthy and productive give him another year at a price no one else will touch.

Papi will whine since he's basically an overgrown child, but he's not stupid so he'll eventually re-sign if offered.

Yep. Three rings. Renew each year and keep him on a two year string until he starts to falter.
