Red Sox wary of Ortiz

07:28 AM ET 02.03 | For starters, the conversation isn't about respect. No, this is all about risk. ... Far be it for us to advise Red Sox/Boston Globe owner John Henry on how to manage his finances, but gambling that Ortiz' decline will begin in the aftermath of his historic World Series and a four-year stretch in which his OPS ranks behind only Cabrera, Cincinnati's Joey Votto and Toronto's Jose Bautista doesn't sound like a good bet. In this case, money spent now may well be money saved later. It's hardly a slam dunk, though. So rather than simply giving in to sentiment and throwing one more year at Ortiz, the Sox are being careful about overexposing themselves to his inevitable decline. Ortiz may not care much for the process, but he has to respect it, just as the Red Sox respect him.

He's dedicated to the Sox and Money, You can't beat that combination!!!!!

Oh, for crying out loud. It's not long they're negotiating a long term contract here. It's just a 1 yr extension.

February 3, 2014  08:29 AM ET

If he's still got something left he will stay in Boston.

February 3, 2014  08:29 AM ET

He just cannot get that contract his buddy Cano just got out of his head. You better believe it effects his thinking. Just human nature.

1 yr extension for big papa is no brainer! if bosox dont want him the yanks will rent him for a year

I kept waiting for the Manning lead come back.... it never came (thank heavens). Seattle - born 1976, first SB 2006, first SB win 2013/2014 season....... it's been a long time coming....

Now I'm going to defend Manning..... his two interceptions (and yes the 1st one was tipped at the line if you watched the slo mo) were because of the D not him throwing a stupid pass. Again, the QB's get too much credit, and too much blame..... Manning completed almost 70% of his passes and he took what the D gave him.... It was more the case of a GREAT game by Seattle as a team effort than just a crappy DEN..... IMHO.....

Some of what you say is correct Lou. But yesterday Peyton dd what Peyton does best....choke in the biggest games. You can look back to his years at Tennessee to see the same pattern.

I'm wondering - if there is suspicion by the Red Sox Management of his name allegedly showing up on the PED list, his resurgence, and his age in the first place isn't the real concern..... though the money wouldn't be coming out of the pocket, it's still a major disruption to the team for a potential positive test..... Just a thought.... not saying he is doping.... but there may be concerns in the back's of management's minds...

The Red Sox gave Ortiz a 2 year deal last year with the tacit understanding that they WOULD NOT revisit it this year. Ortiz kind of went back on that agreement.

MVP was the Seattle D line in my opinion. They were in Manning's grill all night, Denver's O line got taken to school.

Agreed - it was the D with the tight coverage that kept the pressure on Manning all evening.... one of the people I was watching the game with last night said it best..... "Even when there was a completed pass, there seemed to be 3 defenders around them all night long, almost as if SEA had more than 11 men on the field"...... I thought that summed it up pretty well.... The whole D was awesome last night.

Funny how success can breed a foggy memory.....
