07:29 AM ET 02.03 | The names remaining unsigned are a quantity, to be sure, but quality? You can also dig through the rubble and find Paul Maholm, Erik Bedard, Joe Saunders, Jeff Niemann, Jake Westbrook, Chris Capuano, Johan Santana, A.J. Burnett, Carl Pavano, Jeff Karstens, and Tommy Hanson. ... We mentioned last week that the Orioles could be the wild card for Burnett because he lives in Baltimore. And it's really looking like a Baltimore-Philadelphia-Pittsburgh runoff for his services. Landing Burnett would be a coup for the Orioles, who need a top pitcher to compete with the Red Sox, Rays, and Yankees. Of course, as in all things Orioles, it comes down to money. It also wouldn't shock this reporter if the Yankees were trying to get Burnett back.

I don't think the Yankees will sign Him!!!!

At his age I would not sign him for no more than a one year deal. If I am the O's you could sign two of these pitchers mention above for the same price you would have to pay AJ and probably be better off in the long run.

Sweepstakes for a 4th or 5th starter? A career .520 record?

It wouldn't shock this FN member if this reporter was hitting the pipe.

That reporter has to be if he thinks AJ would go back to NY for any amount of money.

This reporter is tweaking if he thinks the Yankees will resign Burnett.

Is anyone else insulted by the term "Burnett Sweepstake"?

They can sign the holy trinity of Pavano, Karstens and AJ. Ah the golden era of Yankee pitching.

February 3, 2014  05:50 PM ET

I have never seen a city so obsessed with a rival in any sport. Even when the Red Sox win a championship, they can't keep NY off their minds. I guess that is what 86 years of embarrassment does to a team/city. Lucchino can't look in the mirror without seeing the ghost of George Steinbrenner. It is entertaining.
