Lakers seek (Phoenix?) picks for Gasol

07:25 AM ET 02.04 | The Lakers have hit the road this week, taking off Monday for a three-game trip without the injured Pau Gasol -- but will he still be in Los Angeles when the team returns? The Lakers and Phoenix Suns have engaged in trade talks for Gasol, though there is one main holdup to a deal being consummated. The Lakers want a better first-round pick than what the Suns currently offer. The Suns (29-18) are surprisingly good this season, making their draft pick correspondingly low (23rd overall). They own at least one other pick in the NBA draft in June, Indiana's first-round selection, currently 30th overall. ... A trade could still happen with the Suns between now and the Feb.20 trade deadline, but the Lakers planned to field other offers for Gasol, according to an official familiar with the situation.

Nobody is bending over for the Lakers and giving them a great deal like they used to. Stern and Jerry are gone now kids. Welcome to how the rest of us live.

Lakers think they can fleece other teams but it's not working anymore. The Cavs deal for Bynum was the best deal but they thought they could get a better deal. The fans feel the same way. How do you say no to Bynum and some picks. They would have accomplished 3 things in that deal. They get rid of Pau's huge contract while getting some picks and they get to release Bynum. Stupid I say. They say that Kupcake is a good GM but he hasn't done anything good for awhile. That Pau trade from Memphis was still a jerry West move. It was a thank you gift for improving the Grizzlies...

Yeah, teams are not giving up great deals anymore but it's still LA and players love to play there so in a way the Lakers will still get the deal they want because of the attraction of LA; it will cost other teams a ton on money to hold on to their players. Believe me, there are players out there wanting that opportunity to play in LA knowing that the culture of the Lakers team is about to transition very soon. So regardless if Pheonix make the trade or not and the Lakers hold on to Gasol the advantage remains with the Lakers. Sooner or later the players will sign to play in LA.

That's pretty much over especially w/ the new CBA and Kobe is already old and broken down. I haven't seen a star player go there on their own yet except for the crazy MWP.

forget the last two years and then look at the 10+ years before that they didn't really need a lot of help from free agency the team was always one of the best, they won 5 championships in 10 years and pretty sure they lost one in their too and they did what major players like they attempted to get good players through trade to help the team out, not too mention they probably didn't have the cap space for people to just go and play there

They were real good for a long time because of the talent Jerry acquired. Shaq and then Kobe lead them to titles. The question now is will they reload with talent that can lead them to titles? There aren't many guys out there like that right now and those that are are not available. (LBJ, Durant)

what do you guys mean??? Lakers fleecing other franchises??? they were legitimate trades ??? not our fault they worked out better for the Lakers?? that's what a great GM (Jerry West) does?? you guys sound like a bunch a crybabies crying over spilled milk?? nobody forced anybody to do the past deals with the Lakers?? in fact one of their best deals (CP3) was axed by the league.....but you all still bitter?? and to anybody still griping over the Gasol deal??? its looking a lot sweeter for Memphis right now cause Marc is a hell of a lot better player than Pau is at this point in their careers and will be for some time...

Lmao @ Big-Boned Bennett in the classic Wilt photo. With how much of an EPIC FAILURE his first Season has turned out to be, scoring 15 probably did feel like 100!Taking the Ball out of Kyrie's hands and making Jack the starting pg was a smart move by King Tater. Sadly, it won't make any difference this Season because the damage has already been done.At least they put up a decent effort yesterday. But, your Mavs still hung another " L " on the side of their domes....lmao

speaking of losing..... where has Russ been lately?? we have a playoff bet over avatars that the Cavs have to finish the season above .500... they have to go something like 26 / 8 to finish the season above .500.. not happening Russ!!!

Hard to understand when you sprinkle question marks everywhere. Please try some of the other punctuation available to you. :)

Mathematically it's getting close much like the Lakers/Mavs bet that Gugy and DJ made with Guam.

How does a team get rid of their troubled and useless players for a star player in his prime? Nobody wanted Kwame Brown, smush Parker, and Crittenton. That was a one-sided deal and everybody knows it except the Lakers fans. That was a thank you gift for Jerry West doing a great job for the Grizzlies. They say it's a great trade now after 3-6 years in the making because Marc is an allstar now and Pau is almost garbage. Now they're trying to get rid of Pau and trying to sell to every team that he is still a diamond. I've said that Bynum trade would have been great but somehow the Lakers want too much for Pau.

Tanking is a real artwork this year. Watching the Magic play the Bucks and seeing them trying to lose to each other was entertaining.
