07:35 AM ET 02.04 | Is Thomas Vanek now beginning to pave his way out of town? [Vanek] has turned down a significant contract offer from the New York Islanders, his agent confirmed to ESPNNewYork.com, and appears headed to test the market this summer. "He's strongly leaning toward not making a decision before July 1," agent Steve Bartlett told ESPNNewYork.com when reached by phone Monday morning. Islanders general manager Garth Snow, who acquired Vanek in a trade with Buffalo earlier this season, apparently made an offer that was comparable to Vanek's current seven-year, $50 million deal. ... Vanek would likely be one of the most coveted rentals on the market, although Bartlett said he has not shut the door on the Islanders. Vanek has said previously that he'd consider the Islanders as a free agent when that time comes.

Is this guy as good as he thinks he is?

News flash for the interns.

By the 15-16 season, the Isles will be playing in Brooklyn. Not "the island".

What you meant to say was "Vanek turned down $50M compensation for being exiled to Brooklyn."

Or

"Vanek turned down $50M compensation because the Islanders could not promise they would abandon forever the fisherman jersey and the hideously ugly blue and orange barforama he was forced to where in this picture."

I suspect it's not JUST about the money with Vanek. He wants to lock on with a good team with a good shot at making the playoffs every year.

Absolutely. To offer him less than what Kessel got is a slap in the face.

Agreed. And Vanek actually has a personality.

In one short word? No!

And so did Cashin' Yashin. Except, when it comes to talent, this guy ain't no Yashin. I say he's well on his way to becoming another Danny Heatley.

...? He's probably having his best season in the show, now that he's finally playing with a real #1 centreman. He can probably get $9m/yr on the open market.

Sure. Some dumb arse GM is going to give it to him. Just like they did with Yashin and Heatley. But, can he help the team win more than either of those two?

He's scored over 30 and over 40 goals twice each before but being in Buffalo is overshadowed by the other NY teams.

or the Bills?

February 4, 2014  10:46 AM ET

7yrs/50 mil offer does not make sense. Why wouldn't the Isles offer 8 years? And that isn't even a raise over his previous contract. I thought they were going to offer a Perry/Getz/Kessel type contract.

Vanek just wants to go to Minn. (or his wife does) and will probably take a discount to go there.

He's a scorer. That alone makes him sought after.
