Texans leaning toward drafting Blake Bortles

03:50 PM ET 02.04 | The NFL Draft is now the focus of almost every team in the NFL and this May will see the Houston Texans make another big decision with the No. 1 overall pick. The last time they owned the pick, they went with a solid player over the popular player, and that seems to be their strategy again in 2014. According to Russ Lande, the Houston Texans are leaning toward taking UCF quarterback Blake Bortles and not Texas A&M star Johnny Manziel. Bortles has started to emerge as the leader of the quarterback class this year and the Texans having interest in him over Manziel is starting to become less and less surprising.

Seems like last time they were in this position the "popular" vote was another Texan, Vince Young and there is no doubt they made the right choice avoiding that fragile basket case and they would be wise to avoid Manziel. Not only is he too small*to survive, he suffers from a very bad case of affluenza.

*frail, not short.

Blake "One Hit Wonder" Bortles. I'd rather have his girlfriend. Smokin'!

Blake who?

February 4, 2014  08:18 PM ET

O'Brien will not take Manziel he does not fit his offensive philosophy nor does Bridgewater really sending Caldwell doing cartwheels down to the podium to pick him at 3 although here is where the Rams might get the value for their 2nd overall pick as the Browns or Vikes might want to leapfrog the Jags to take Teddy if the Rams trade with the Vikes it might be that the Raiders end up the big winner with Clowney falling in their laps

Quarterback top 5 selection don't worry you are about to be inundated with info about him

How about Rothlisberger to the Cards for a rumor

As often, drafting the first QB is a roll of the dice--and then the class of the class often emerges a few years later as a 3rd to 6th round pick (see Joe Montana and Tom Brady).

Green Bay should draft him as a back up

If you saw film of Brady at the combine he had the muscle consistency of an oyster and battled Henson for the starting gig at Michigan Montana was the 3rd string QB at Notre Dame in his redshirt junior season if Gary Forystek doesn't end up with a broken clavicle and vertebrae the legend of Joe Cool may never have happened

This is a move that I don't think I would make. To me, it has JaMarcus Russell written all over it.

Do the Cards deserve that?

Stick him in the trunk next to the spare!

I did not know that. Montana still rules!

Arians was his OC at Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh is well known for letting players go instead of paying them and are in constant cap space renegotiation mode. The other one and this is if the Texans decide to take Clowney 1 is for them to trade their #2 and another 3rd day pick for Big Ben and reload as opposed to rebuild the offense

Jamarcus was not a student of the game he was just a great talent that didn't have to work to be elite at every level till he made the NFL and then his lackadaisical approach put him in a position that he's begging to even get looks 6 years later (VY and Leinhart could be added to this list)

I don't know if Bortles is the next Roesthlisberger or Dan McGwire.

Considering the need in other areas (defensive backs that can cover, o-line that don't moonlight as matadors, etc), I don't see GB drafting a backup QB this year, especially now that Flynn is back.

Come on, everyone points out Brady and Montana....but leaves out the hundreds of QBs taken in those rounds that don't make it. Look at the first round hits like Manning*2, Ben, Bradshaw, Rogers,.etc. Until Sunday Brady was the only non-First round QB to win a super bowl since Brad Johnson!
