07:43 AM ET 02.05 | Michigan native and five-star defensive lineman Malik McDowell's family has spoken -- loudly. The 6-foot-7, 290-pound McDowell favors Michigan State. His parents would like to see him at Florida State or Ohio State. "As far as me and his mom are concerned, I think everyone knows where we stand," Greg McDowell, Malik's father said on Monday. ... "[As] long as he gets away from Michigan we don't care where he goes. We've expressed numerous times all we want is the best for him and seeing him get out of here we think is best. ... You have to be somewhere you have less distractions and be around people that do what you do, go to class, be football players, be a student-athlete. That's the environment I want him to be around, and not be in close proximity to his friends. I want him out of Michigan."

Seems as if there's other issues inferred in Dad's declarations. Puzzling.

"I want him out of Michigan."

I hereby nominate Greg McDowell for national "Parent of the Year".

I'm pleasantly suprised at McDowell signing with MSU. It's hard to go against your parent's publicly stated wishes. Can't blame the kid for his parent's behavior. I hope McDowell does well. Spartans just lost a projected starting DT (Scarpinato) who had the audacity to graduate in 3 years and get accepted to medical school. What's this country coming to? Don't these guys know they're supposed to just play football?

Good program at MSU. Kid should do fine. Were the parents actually talking about UM?

No. His patents wanted him out of the state of Michigan altogether. Said they wanted him away from "bad influences." I agree with you, however. I think he'll be fine at Sparty. Congrats DS, looks like he's gonna be a good one.

His parents always wanted their son to go to UM. When he told them (about a month ago) that he wanted to go to MSU, they started a campaign that basically said, "anyone but MSU". After the official visit, initial comments from the father were lukewarm to positive. All comments from the mother have been negative about MSU. I don't know how his parents will be able to attend home games after the negative things that they (especially the mother) said about MSU. It's perfectly okay for parents to advise and disagree with the kids on things like school selection, but keep it private. Don't conduct interviews and make it a public matter.

Sounds like they want him out of reach of his high school buddies/groupies. I can definitely understand that.

Congrats and a virtual fist bump to Scarpinato.

Borrow "aunt & uncle" identities?

Stories are circulating that McDowell's mother made so many negative comments during the official visit that other recruits and their parents didn't want to be around her.
