Wolverines' QB race officially open

07:47 AM ET 02.05 | When it comes to individual statics, Michigan senior quarterback Devin Gardner has been impressive: He nearly eclipsed the 3,000-yard mark, including games of 500-plus and 400-plus passing yards in 2013. But Michigan finished 7-6. And, per Michigan coach Brady Hoke, once Gardner is healthy enough to practice in full, he'll be engaged in an open competition for the starting quarterback job heading into 2014. "I think (the starting quarterback for next season is) an unknown," Hoke said Monday. "We were 7-6 (last season). And we've got a lot of young guys (on the team). We've got a lot of competition. Does Devin have the most experience? Yes, there's no question." Gardner will be "limited" when Michigan opens spring practice later this month as he continues to recover from a foot injury.

Interns: Leave "race' out of this.

It is obvious that I am a Bucknut but I would have to agree with Choke on this. Devin is a good kid they need more out of their QB. Turnover prone and he hurt them in many games.

I hope OSU/FSU get M.McDowell, after what his mom pulled off yesterday. LOL good luck dealing with those two nut cases.

QB is hardly UM's biggest concern. O-line and "D"s/b dominating the headlines. Lots of work to do.

What is a buckeye? It is a smelly rotting nut. Plus Garnder has butter fingers.

Gardner's butterfingers are better than if he had baby ruths. And have you ever tried buckeye pie? (Ugh, try pecan instead.)

If we don't fix our defense, we won't get by Rutgers!

I don't know if Hike is seriously opening up the QB to competition, but it is the thing to do to save his job. Gardner needs to go back to a WR position and have a shot in the NFL.

Gotta fix that O line first.

Hey River,
I have heard this so much from Michigan fans and others; but, personally, I disagree. IMO Morris is not ready (better arm) and Gardner is the better option. Gardner needs to improve his consistency and accuracy; but we will find out this fall. [Gardner probably out for spring with toe injury.]

The new offensive coordinator will analyze the position and make the best decision for the team. I am OK with either.

My concerns lie (as stated earlier) with the O-line and the "D" overall. Many concerns here.

Hi Tinny,

Wow . . . up to 22,000 I see. You need to go on a diet. ;-)

IIRC, Hoke said that since they finished 7-6, all positions should be considered open.
