07:55 AM ET 02.05 | Thomas Vanek isn't immune to how it looks to have turned down what might have been $50 million from the Islanders. "I'm sure people will look at it and say, 'Wow, that's crazy by him,' or whatever," Vanek told Newsday Tuesday morning, a day after news broke that he had indeed rejected such a deal and will now almost certainly be traded before the March 5 deadline. But it's not about the Islanders, he said. "As I've told [general manager] Garth [Snow] before ... It's like a breakup: It's not you, it's me. And it really is me wanting to explore this." ... For whatever it is worth, he said Tuesday his decision is not about money -- seven years, eight years, $50 million or $60 million. "It's just me being a little selfish, I guess, and wanting to get to July 1 and seeing what's out there," he said.

When people say that to a girlfriend/Boyfriend they really mean " IT'S YOU;YOU !@#$%^&*(

Can't blame the man for wanting to choose his next place of employment.

February 5, 2014  08:21 AM ET

It's about wanting to play somewhere else.

Memo to Isles:

He is just not that into you

Nope. And by the way he played last night, he's just not into hockey. I never seen a hockey player take a night off the way he did last night. That guy can loaf!!

It's dissappointing but time to move on and trade him. No sense trying to get him to sign as his intentions are clear. Also, they should keep this guy from playing until he's traded. With the Isles luck he'll end up on IR soon.

That's what Danny Heatley always says.

Surprised he didn't invoke that other well-worn phrase of rejection...

I'm confused.

Another bad snow job on the Isle, break-up was inevitable.

I think that's the bottom line.

He better start picking up his game if he wants a decent contract though.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to explore free agency and it is his only real chance to do so. Plus, with the cap going up, he will have more options than any other year. I honestly think he just wants to see what Minn. will be able to offer and if it's not enough he will explore other options.

Vaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan-nutz! Or Van-dedfrumtha-nek-up.

Also, you have to commend Snow for taking a shot. It didn't work out, but at least he did something. I think why Islander fans, myself included, are so mad is because he took the wrong shot. It was/is clear that D and G are the Isles biggest weakness and he did nothing to address that. Why upgrade your forwards when your letting in 3-4 goals a night? No matter how good that first line is you can't rely on them scoring 4-5 goals every game just to get a win.

19 G 28 A so what he gets at least 30 playing with JT barring injury....so he will most likely get a huge payday; but wonder what the mkt. is like for Snow knowing that he is a rental for the receiving team

For what he gave up, we should have Ryan Miller between the pipes instead of finding JT a winger. It was a good shot, just for the wrong Sabre.

Funny, that's whose place he wants to take.
