07:26 AM ET 02.06 | Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim understands his former one-and-done star Carmelo Anthony likes it in New York, but he may want to think about the larger implications of his next contract: his legacy. [Boeheim], said on ESPN Radio Wednesday that Anthony should play for a team that can win it all. "The problem in the NBA, you're judged on winning championships," Boeheim said. "He's got to try to go and play where they can win a championship or else he's going to be a failure. That's the bottom line." Anthony has said he will opt out of his contract and become a free agent in July. The Knicks can offer him about $34 million more than any other team. Boeheim didn't rule out Anthony re-signing, but suggested the Knicks have to make some moves to keep him.

Well maybe Melo being the "BEST" player and wanting to be "The Man" is the reason he is never going to win a championship....

+1. Melo wants to be Allan Iverson, although maybe he doesn't realize it -- or care.

Just like I've said before and Boeheim reiterates, championships are a poor way to determine greatness but the average (below average really) fan equates greatness to rings.

I'd rather be the best player and the man and make 15-20 million a year than be a third wheel on the Heat and make 5 million just so I could wear the bling.

Maybe Melo will go to the Clippers in the summer instead? NY should trade him now. Get Blake before Miami trades for him in the summer.

Better To Win In The Game Of Life, Bro.

you are perfect for cleveland then....I guess you have more cred on the game of basketball than an ncaa champion coach...rings seperate the alphas from the the good players...all nba players beleive this ....On to Melo...he has been awesome for a dismal team...but if he moves on, so be it...the Knicks will have all the cap room in the world by the all star game next year, ...now if management will not screw it up is another question

More cred? Read what Boeheim says idiot! "The problem in the NBA, you're judged on winning championships," See the word PROBLEM? Even Boeheim understands that its a PROBLEM to judge players on titles.

Thats pretty sad

Really? So those guys sitting on the end of the Heat bench just there to get a ring are smarter than the guy likely to sign a contract for 20 million per season? I'll remember that when those Heat bench warmers are bankrupt and selling those rings on Ebay.

It is about what Melo wants. All great players want to win and get paid. He has reached a point in his career where he wants to win over getting paid max.

MOST NBA players might make more money playing in China or Dubai or some other place, if that's the only object then. Average salary is like $5M per in the NBA, and about 75% players make less than that

This logic is flawed man. The people sitting on the end of the Heat are there because they are not 20 million/yr players. They are roll players, that sacrificed some money to win. Rashard Lewis has made max money was amnestied before, Ray Allen has made top money before turned down slightly more money to win, Beasly is borderline out of the league man. These guys on the Heat bench are not 10mill/yr players.
