Steelers safety: players smoke weed to relieve stress, pain

06:16 PM ET 02.06 | In the recent weeks, the use of marijuana among NFL players has become a hot topic and drummed up plenty of discussion throughout the media. Former Baltimore Ravens and Chicago Bears linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo said that his teammates smoked marijuana before their Super Bowl appearance a year ago, and New York Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie said that NFL players will smoke regardless of a marijuana ban. The latest player to speak out is Pittsburgh Steelers safety Ryan Clark, who appeared on ESPN Thursday morning to discuss the issue and he said that some of his own teammates use the drug as well. However, Clark says that his teammates have a good reason to smoke marijuana, which is to relieve the pain that their bodies experience from the NFL and to relieve stress that they may experience while going through the weekly grind. It brings up an interesting issue that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will have to address, and it may be wise to allow medicinal marijuana use in the NFL if players go through the proper legal procedures to get their license.

Yeah and so? wonder ifn both super bowl teams indulged before the game, by the way of the score? I figured the Broncos over did it.

It's somewhat funny that this discussion is happening less than half a season after Browner got suspended for a season for smoking pot.

February 7, 2014  02:47 AM ET

To clarify, if pot becomes legal this season in the NFL, Browner could still be serving a suspension for what is now legal.

Free agent class of QB's is very thin, so these teams looking for a backup QB are going to reach out to a lot of undrafted or cut QB's by other teams to find a suitable backup.

I thought it was just for their glaucoma.

Sure, some of them do. But the kind of pain a lot of them find themselves in barely gets touched by Vicodin. Weed is the most amazing pain management drug I've ever known, and without it I probably would have just checked out a few years ago. Is the high fun, too? Sure, it doesn't suck that it relaxes you and makes you feel euphoric, but mainly it's about relief of serious pain. I think it makes perfect sense in the NFL.

I know I love my special carrot cake. It's not quite the same oral fixation but they could always chew on a pencil.

Yeah but when you're high you don't feel the pain. Course the same goes for when you're drunk too. And BOTH are very danagerous if you drive under the influence/intoxicated (DUI/DWI)!!! Thinking about it, there are some pain pills you're NOT suposed to drive while taking too.

So, I guess I'm saying that if you need it for pain relief it doesnt excuse driving while under the influence. There are already players who have trouble with this. Letting more use weed will just increase that number unless the NFL institutes a program to keep them off the roads or makes it clear one strike and you're out. Unforunately, a one strike rule is the only thing I see getting through to most players. Too bad it will never be ALL!!!
