O's left with last closer standing

07:30 AM ET 02.07 | In a way, Tommy Hunter, as closers have signed elsewhere, has become a winner by default. On Thursday, the Seattle Mariners and Fernando Rodney, the last remaining name closer available reportedly reached agreement on a two-year, $14 million contract. The Orioles had some interest in Rodney, but not at that price. After the Orioles traded Jim Johnson in early December, Rodney was one of the names on the team's back burner. After the agreement with Grant Balfour, who signed for $1 million less over two years with Tampa Bay, Rodney's former team, collapsed, the Orioles sniffed around Rodney. The Orioles weren't interested in Rodney at the price Seattle is paying for him. Unless manager Buck Showalter has a secret plan for auditioning other closers during spring training, Hunter would be the team's closer.

They had a proven closer and let him go and around June or so we will be reading about how bad the O's need a closer to help them stay out of the basement in their division.

Jim Johnson somehow saved 50 games last yesr. He was lucky in about half of those, and he blew 9 saves single handed. He caot Tillman a shot at winning 20 games, by blowing 3 of his wins.

I think there is at least one closer out there who is available. Right now I think Huston Street could easily be had from the Padres and in the right deal, towards the middle of the season, I think the dodgers would part with Brian Wilson. It's not hopeless Oriole fans.
