07:38 AM ET 02.07 | So much for a long-term relationship in orange and blue. The offer was there, it was rejected, and now Andrew MacDonald has to start contemplating life in the NHL with a team other than the Islanders. About a month and a half ago, the top-four defenseman turned down a four-year contract worth $16 million, The Post has learned. So now, as the Olympic roster freeze approaches on Friday at 3 p.m., and the March 5 trade deadline nears, Islanders general manager Garth Snow is set to deal MacDonald to the highest bidder. MacDonald and his agent had previously asked for a four- or five-year deal at around $5 million per, and even got the Islanders to come up from their original starting price of $3.5 million per.

He and his agent must think that TOR still has money left to overpay for D-men

He's a 2nd pairing DEF at best. 2PP unit player at best. So, 4/16 was an amazingly fair deal for him. I'm actually quite happy he thinks this highly of himself and declined the offer.

God, our GM has egg on his face on a daily basis at this point. Guy can't catch a break.

He will get over 4 mil a year easy on the open market. Lots of articles about him recently and how underrated he is. Showed stats of how top players do against him and it isn't very good.

Your GM is terrible. For some reason the NY hockey teams allow their GM's to have life time contracts without doing anything.

You make your own luck. And his is all bad.

Seriously, you trade 2 players, keep back salary, and only get a 4th????

I don't think the trade was that bad. It was two players that sucked all year that are on one-way contracts and if they eat a little salary so Strome has a roster spot every night, I'm fine with that.

The fact that they got ANYTHING for those bums surprises me. I think they only way this deal worked was if Snow ate some contract. CHI is tapped.

Thank you Nard. He is terrible :)

I don't doubt he'll get more than $4M but he's not worth anything close to that.

I hear GM Garth Snow has booked Dr. Phil and Dr. Laura for the balance of the season to help him deal with rejection.

Four goals and a -12, not a real deal. I would have taken the 16M.

I think he and Vanek want off Gilligan's Island.

What has he really done well, and you can't say JT as he was a slam dunk #1.

The Isles have to over pay to keep guys. If they don't they won't stay there. Their D isn't very good to begin with. Losing him won't make them better.

The Vanek trade, well let's just see what he gets in return for him now. Cause it was a bad first trade but if he gets equal value then nothing lost.

The Hawks are at it again, loading up for the playoffs. The Islanders have traded forwards Pierre-Marc Bouchard and Peter Regin to Chicago for a 2014 fourth-round pick.

roamer - those guys are useless. They were 4th line depth on the Islanders and couldn't even crack the lineup.

You don't think they can help the Rockford Icehogs?

There was an article a while back about how the Metro Division hasn't had new GM since the early 2006. Minus Columbus who is new. Which is crazy. Seeing that only 3 teams (Pens, Devils and Carolina new to the division) have actually won the cup in the past 15 years.

I hate Snow, but in order for him to go, the team needs to be sold. Isles problems start at the top and trickle down.
