Gores wanted Cheeks gone

07:33 AM ET 02.10 | Over the weekend, the Pistons parted ways with Maurice Cheeks. Despite back-to-back victories over the weekend, general manager Joe Dumars informed Cheeks of his dismissal on Sunday morning, sources said. Cheeks didn't make it to the All-Star break of his first season as Detroit's coach. He was in the first year of a two-year contract with the Pistons. Owner Tom Gores had become increasingly impatient with Cheeks, and sources with knowledge of his plans say that he had been pushing for a change in the coaching staff. Eight different coaches have been replaced under Dumars' run as GM, but league sources told Yahoo Sports he had been an advocate of giving Cheeks more time as coach -- especially in light of back-to-back victories over the weekend.

With Gores impatience and Dumar's lack of knowledge the Pistons are doomed for a long time coming.

Makes little sense.

Eight coaches... One GM.

With the talent that the Pistons accumulated over the off-season any coach would be on a short leash if thing did not begin to come to fruition soon. Cheeks have the reputation of being a good assistant and not a good head coach.

So - what's the scuttlebutt up there? Any "names" floating around?

Seems to me that if the talent is there and a coach is needed, the first phone call should be to either Hollins or Karl.

I heard Hollins will be the HC. He wanted to be the HC bit only got offered as an assistant coach last summer.

Good for Pistons fans. He's on the very short list of coaches I admire from afar. If they do indeed have the correct pieces, he will make them play as a team. If not, then Gomes needs to stop treading water and fire Dumars.

Dumars should have been fired first. He is becoming to be the new Isiah Thomas. Must be a Pistons thing.

how does joe D still have a job?
his championship was TEN years ago

Mo Cheeks was the fall guy for a GM that has lost his touch.

Too bad Joe Dumars can't fire himself.

February 10, 2014  03:40 PM ET

this was just a bad move, plain and simple! Mo is a class guy who knows basketball, he would be a great addition in Cleveland

February 10, 2014  03:49 PM ET

again this the same joe dumars when carmelo anthony was available drafted the white kwame brown at #2 darko milochick. i bet if you ask piston's fans they would say joe you were great player but as gm you suck, and i feel why bird has succeeded where few others have, is because bird seems like a players guy and has made all the right choices
