Inside Sampson's Indiana buyout

Kelvin Sampson's resignation agreement says he may not "interfere in any way" with his former team, including anything that might discourage players from "cooperating in the transition to a new head coach." The former Indiana University men's basketball coach also agreed to "fully cooperate" with the school in its upcoming NCAA hearing related to allegations of potentially major rules violations in Sampson's program. IU officials said they opted for a buyout because they were concerned about losing a wrongful termination lawsuit. They also said that they had received $550,000 toward the settlement from a donor who wants to remain anonymous.

So, I assume textual intercourse with his former players is a violation?

February 26, 2008  10:33 AM ET

I doubt it cuz he isnt discouraging them from playing....hes doing quite the opposite by encoraging them to go out and win every game from now on.

can you believe all this about phone calls. if bush received money from a booster while at usc, isn't that a major violation of ncaa rules. i.u. fires a guy who made phone calls, not giving money, gifts or anything else. just phone calls, and then covering it up. i guess in bush's case he has usc to hide behind.

Bush wasn't involved with a booster it was an agent. I insist that it's a crucial difference. Sampson is a coach and university employee and comparing his situation and moral responsibility with those of a player such as Bush is unfair.

The Indianapolis Star reported that he was STILL texting the players after their win over Northwestern. How classless and disrespectful to his former employers and Indiana fans, to say nothing of his humiliated former players.

sure wish I could fine a $550,000 anonymous donor to buy out the contract of Cal's coach -- and several others with whom I disagree

February 26, 2008  01:15 PM ET

Man, I wish my employer would give me $750,000 to go away. I'd knock him down as i ran out the door!

^^^haha

Hell yeah, I would be out quicker than Bobby Petrino!

What a world...you get almost a million dollars for screwing up..TWICE!

February 27, 2008  09:36 AM ET

textual intercourse, haha!

February 27, 2008  09:49 AM ET

Sampson's disgrace isn't his calls and texting, it's the fact that he was specifically prohibited by the NCAA from doing it, did it anyway, then LIED to his own employer and the NCAA that he wasn't aware of three-way calls. He knew. The fact that he lied to Indiana is grounds alone for his dismissal, regardless of the NCAA investigation.
