Pitt slipping to bubble territory

07:40 AM ET 02.10 | My, how time flies. It wasn't that long ago people were talking about Pitt winning the ACC regular-season championship and about Lamar Patterson being conference Player of the Year. And they were being serious. But that was before an outbreak of ugly throwback basketball by the Panthers in general and Patterson in particular. This epidemic of poor play threatens to push Pitt, despite a 20-4 record, in the direction of the dreaded NCAA tournament bubble. After losing consecutive games at home to Duke and Virginia, Pitt has won two in a row but did nothing to elevate its status with shabby performances in an overtime win at Miami Wednesday and a double overtime win over Virginia Tech [Saturday] at the Petersen Events Center.

Pitt is 20-4, tied for 3rd in the ACC and either 25th or 23rd in the rankings (depending on which you look at; AP vs Coaches) and their RPI is 23rd. Sure the last 2+ weeks haven't been pretty, but they are no where near a bubble team.

Not that this is gospel, but Joe Lunardi's Bracketology has them as a 6th seed, and rising.
