Speculation swirls around Isles

07:38 AM ET 02.11 | At long last, the Olympic break has set upon the NHL, but there's no rest from the speculation surrounding Thomas Vanek and Andrew MacDonald. [Vanek] is going to Sochi to captain Austria's hockey team while MacDonald is headed to "someplace warm" with his girlfriend to decompress. There's little chance either will remain an Islander beyond the Mar. 5 trade deadline, which could certainly complicate Vanek's Olympic tournament for underdog Austria as well as MacDonald's vacation. ... "It's not exactly what you want to be going through," said MacDonald, who rejected a four-year, $16 million offer earlier this season and is seeking over $5 million per year in a new deal. "I'm sure it'll cross my mind during the break, but that's time to get away from it all."

MacDonald sure has an overinflated opinion of his own contractual value.

"[Vanek] is going to Sochi to captain Austria's hockey team..."

There go Putin's hopes of a gold medal for Russia to help pay the expenses!

I'm sure 'contract' is the furthest thing from his mind right now. More likely he's focused on 'contractions' in certain parts of his and his girlfriends anatomy.

Is it me or does Sochi seem void of olympic tourists and spectators?

Hard for them to get past the Iron Curtain set up around Sochi. Plus, they can't have tourists and spectators flashing toilets all over the place.

As long as you have Garth Snow running things with Wang, what can go wrong.

Top 3 d money haven't seen him play although THN raves about him. If the Isles think he's worth 4 and he wants 5 they have a mountain of cap space and what's wrong with finding middle ground here
