07:39 AM ET 02.11 | What would gold mean to the home-country team? $50 billion, if you're Russian hockey star Alex Ovechkin. That's approximately the reported cost of building and hosting Russia's first Winter Olympics, and for Ovechkin, it will all pay off if only Russia can win the men's hockey gold medal game February 23. If Russia can end a gold medal-less streak dating back to the Soviet victory at Calgary 1988, "It means gold only costs $50 billion," the Washington Capitals forward said after training in Sochi. A cost estimate by the Russian government for infrastructure and hosting costs for the Games put the cost at $51 billion last year, although Russian officials and the International Olympic Committee have since said it is only fair to count $6.4 billion of direct hosting costs.

Keep piling on the pressure, Ovi. That always ends well.

Ovi's always handled the pressure well, thus all the Cup final appearances for the Caps...

Precisely what I'm hoping for. He absolutely embarrassed himself in Vancouver in 2010.

Putin has assured the country that Ovi won't do that again.

Right, Ovi?

What line of men with guns. Ovi? I don't see anything. What are you talking about?

Now, please stand in front of this wall. Don't move!

It sounds like Komarad Putin sent a memo to Ovi "suggesting" they better win gold so they can sell the medals to help pay for the expenses.

So the final cost is $50 billion, give or take $6.5 billion. Alrighty then.

They may have to collect a few gold teeth to put them over the top. Or ... maybe they already did that to make the medals with?

I think we're all missing the hint here that Ovi is going to get 50 Billion from Putin (not to be confused with Poutine) if he wins gold in mens hockey.
My guess would be Putin prints another 50 Billion for it and causes their currency to take another plunge on the global market.

That's possible. It's also possible that the Russians may make up some fake story about explosives hidden in gold jewelry and make everyone turn in all their jewelry as a precauction with the promise it will be returned at the airport before they leave. If anyone complains at the airport they'll shoot them.

I see a future in international finance for Ovi when his hockey career becomes kaputsky.

And will make up for it with gold this time out.

If it's anything like the Summit Series, the Soviets have already wired speakers into the opposing teams' rooms to wake them at 3:30 am with loud music, are preparing hotel employees to ring the room telephones off the hook, and just for good measure are going to shoot Sidney Crosby.

Well to be fai, I have no problem with your suggestion re: Sidney Crosby.
