Oklahoma's 'carbon copy' of Adrian Peterson

07:35 AM ET 02.12 | It didn't take long before the comparisons were being made between five-star running back Joe Mixon, who committed to Oklahoma last month, and Adrian Peterson. Just as quickly, some fans and pundits responded that such comparisons are premature and unfair to Mixon, especially considering the fact that he hasn't played a single snap on Owen Field. Mixon's position coach at Freedom High School in Oakley, Calif., though, didn't shy away from the Peterson talk. "It's not unfair," said Ron Rivers, who played seven seasons in the NFL with the Detroit Lions and Atlanta Falcons. "I've been saying he looks like Adrian Peterson since his first year he came up to play. He's like a carbon copy of the guy." ... [Mixon] rushed for 4,281 yards and 76 touchdowns in three varsity seasons at Freedom High.

Hopefully that doesn't include child abandonment.

Oh good grief. Kid hasn't taken a snap at Zero U and the AP comparison is already in full swing.

I was thinking that it was probably comparable HS stats...but just checked and AP was so far above what this kid has done.

Of course AP was playing a lower class in Texas while JM was in Ca. Freedom HS has 2378 students grade 9-12 while Palestine HS has 800

Okay, maybe it's wrong to speculate on high school talent going into college, but the NFL does it for college talent going into the NFL every year. It's called "the draft." Mixon IS the real deal, it pains me to say as a CAL fan. Mixon was all set to go to CAL - he was a fan from a kid - but thanks to Sonny Dy ke s and his God-knows-what offense, went to OK instead. Dum b a ss D yk es' mistake is OK's gain. Enjoy it, for chrissakes.

Tell you what I'll do George. After 7 years in the league, I'll take the under on this kid having as good a career in the NFL as AP's had. Since you are already sold on him being as good as AP, will you take the over on that?

And for the record, I don't think it is right to place such an onus on a young kid. Anything less than equaling AP is a disappointment. Why can't he just be left alone and be the best Joe Mixon he can be?

Look, I never said anything about him being as good as AP. In fact, I'll have no truck with terming him the "next AP" - that's for his dolt of a coach - and will be quite content having him be "the best Joe Mixon he can be." What I am saying is that he will be special, especially at school that features runners. It's my lament that he's at OU instead of CAL. P iss es me off actually because I'm looking at another disastrous season whereas I'd have at least Mixon to look at on fall Saturdays if D yk es wasn't coach. We can talk about bet another time. I'll forget in the meantime.

I hate things like this...
Let us see him play at the highest level then talk about him!

The beast at fault is the media and those who react favorably to the gilded reporting of such.

Cali 5A < TX 3A

I know, I've watched a ton of HS in both states

I agree. This kid could be the next AP...of course he could be the next Maurice Clarett, too. Why don't we wait til he at least TOUCHES a football on the college level, before we make these RIDICULOUS comparisons.

February 12, 2014  12:32 PM ET

Didn't this same storyline run about 6 weeks ago?

I just wish they would start to rank teams before spring practice, or even a game is played. That way you can lose one of your first 4 games, and still make it to the N.C. instead of being unranked going 11-1 and ending up ohhh say 8th.

The key to all that, it to WIN. Once you lose one, you're at the mercy of the voters. Go undefeated, and you'll make the playoffs. It's that simple.

Agreed.

And ... if you follow the SEC model you have an even better chance of making this happen:

1 decent D1 OOC game - early season
2 LSOP OOC games - 1 early season, 1 mid-season
1 FCS OOC game - late season
8 conference games

Haven't seen Cali but many 3-A districts are damn tough. AP, Billy Sims both from 3A districts. (Hooks may be 2A now) I'd say OU has done well getting guys from that division.

Eric Dickerson came out of a 3A district too. Craig James came out of a 5A. I'd take Dickerson.

From what I understand, the new selection committee is not necessarily required to be beholding to the polls like the BCS was.
