07:32 AM ET 02.13 | While the decision over whether to send players to Sochi, one complicated by a work stoppage, went deep into overtime, this time around will be different. A decision on whether to send the world's best professional players to Pyeongchang, South Korea, in 2018 will be made in about six months, according to NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly. "It should not take all that long, but I would have said the same thing coming out of 2010," said Daly, addressing a group of news outlets in Sochi Tuesday, including Reuters. "We will have a broader discussion with the players' association on international competition and what we are doing internationally. That discussion is underway, so I would anticipate a quick resolution in respect to the Olympics, maybe six months."

Whew! For a second there I thought they were talking about an outdoor game in Pyongyang!

Just curious about Olympic animosity. Because it creates two weeks with no NHL? because you sympathize with billionaire owners who are worried about their employees? because you respect the union and its concern about the well-being of its rank and file? Because the big ice slows the game down? because there isn't enough fighting?

THIS.

In order to award more medals to hockey (2 medals, vs like 80 bajillion for speed skating, cross country skiing, ice dancing, ice prancing & whatever else), they should have separate competition in ice boxing.

If skeleton can exist, then I don't see why we shouldn't sanction ice boxing.

I agree. I wanted to combine high diving with boxing in the summer Olympics. Let them fight on a diving board and if you get knocked off you can still try and nail the dive.

I understand the pros and cons of NHLers in the Olympics, but the tournament is supposed to be for the BEST athletes in the world, not the best also-rans. It's not an NCAA tournament. It's not a junior tournament. It's the highest level of sport on Earth. Not including the best players because someone's paying them to play somewhere else is nonsensical. I don't want to watch AHLers (or worse) in the Olympics. They didn't earn that spot. They would be gifted because the BEST players are forbidden to play. That's dumb. Also... yay, 1000! Do I get a sticker or something?

If you think about it, hockey is the only Limpic blood sport aside from maybe boxing, but they neuter it.

Seeing how we have all these silly X Games medals, I offically cast my vote for Limpic UFC.

Disagree. Soccer and baseball both stick to their guns and avoid the Limpics with their highest echelon players.

Other big sports should grow a pair and do similar. Suddenly saying Limpic Gold is more important than the World Cup or World Series just isn't gonna happen.

And this one and done hockey is certainly not the best format, 7 game series, 5 at least. It's the only reason the US won gold in Lake Placid.

Hockey tournaments without the world's best already exist- world juniors or (arguably since there are some european skaters involved) the NCAA.

The September format is best for the NHL. There can be no argument to that.

Stretching an already ridiculously long season for a Limpic break is insane.

And if they keep the tournament in-house so to speak, profit sharing becomes possible with the players' pension fund or something similar.

Look at Detroit, Zetterberg and Datsyuk can barely play for them but they are over in Europe trying to play. No good can come of that.

Can't we have a winter Olympics in a place where I stand a chance to see live events!!!!!
