... And why they won't

07:34 AM ET 02.13 | Now that the puck has dropped for the United States, what could go wrong? A lot. ... When picking their team, the Americans opted to substitute some offense and speed for grit, toughness and two-way play, and while an argument can be made that this was a smart strategy, another can be made that their roster is tailor made for NHL-sized arenas but not the bigger ice used for the Olympics. The ice in Sochi is 15 feet wider and the neutral zone is 8 feet longer, and that extra space benefits speedy offensive players, who have more room to operate. The U.S. has players like that in former Devils captain Zach Parise, Max Pacioretty, Patrick Kane and James van Riemsdyk, but not nearly as many as some of the best competition.

They certainly seemed really fast today.

I like the bigger ice, NHL should adopt it even if it means taking out seats. HAHAHA

I hate the bigger ice.

Cozy confines make it easier to catch guys you want to thump.

They should just get one superfluous ref off the ice to create more room.

I agree 100% . The big ice makes skating and passing much more important. Teams can actually develop their way into the offensive zone. Way less dump and chase

Every team in the league would need to retool their lineups a bit. The Big surface isn't gonna happen , but i would love it if it could.

The Wings wouldn't have to make any changes to their lineup or strategy; the only tweak would be acclimating their young North American defensemen to the change in ice dimensions, which would happen in a few short games.
