Can Trout reach $40M per season?

07:37 AM ET 02.14 | The Dodgers made Clayton Kershaw a very wealthy man recently, and now, in Anaheim, the Angels have a huge-ticket item looking around in the same neighborhood. But as good and as young as Kershaw is, the reality remains that [Mike Trout] is significantly better, projecting for roughly +4 WAR per season more than Kershaw going forward. In fact, Trout's forecasts suggest he is, by himself, as valuable as Kershaw and [Freddie Freeman] put together. ... While we could put together a reasonable argument that Trout is worth $50M per year for his free agent years, he's not going to get that; it's just too far removed from the norms of the day. As crazy as it sounds, $40 million per year for those five years would actually represent something of a discount, given Trout's expected production going forward.

The money in MLB is getting more and more ridiculous.

He's from NJ, may want to come back East.
Yankees see him as the next coming of Mantle, hopefully sober.
The Red Sox can see him as the next Williams/Yaz.
Could be an interesting bidding war.

The Yankees won't be outbid.

He's going to take the Money now, and I don't blame him!!!!

Forty million? He might as well ask for fifty or sixty at this point. Hell, he should ask to be paid in gold and platinum bullion, with bonuses in bitcoin pending a market rebound.

With the bad moves the Halos have made in free agent signings lately and not even being close in competing for the division title right now, I would trade him to LA or East Coast teams for players and top prospects.

It is still about four years away. Jeesh. He is an East Coast family type small town guy and that is where he will end up. Jeter was his childhood hero and that is why he wore his number in little league and all. Hmmm?

Trout will be all of 26 years old in 2018 when he becomes a free agent. A 10 year contract would end in 2027. So YES, he will see that kind of money and he may not be the only one in MLB with that kind of money. He has shown no interest of staying in LA his whole career.

Heck, if he keeps going as he has he can ask for $20 million in his first year of arbitration eligibility and how could any arbitrator not agree with him? He does not need the Angels for any money security before FA.

They won't get a chance to bid. I predict Trout will sign a very lucrative extension with the Angels.
