07:38 AM ET 02.14 | The time has come to think about life without Derek Jeter playing shortstop for the Yankees. The Yankees could acquire Jeter's replacement during the 2014 season, allowing The Captain to mentor him before formally relinquishing the job. Or they could wait until the offseason, when the best free-agent shortstop will be -- Hanley Ramirez. ... "Everybody knows I grew up looking at Jeter," said Ramirez, almost 10 years his junior. "It's why I wore No. 2 in Miami. He was my idol, my hero. We're going to miss him on the field. He's great on the field, off the field. Everybody's going to miss him.??" Then I reminded Ramirez that his own contract is about to expire. He laughed. "Did you ever have any thought of maybe replacing him?" I asked. Another laugh. "I just want to concentrate on the season."

The Yankees should taxidermy Jeter and just cement him at SS forever. That way, Yankees fans will be able to cope.

It should be noted that his range will not be impacted if this were to happen.

If he started decaying and his glove arm fell off, it might actually be better with it on the ground.

Shocking news...Fregosi was actually a good ballplayer and was involved in the trade that brought Nolan Ryan to the Angels from the Mets.

He would be credited with more assists that way.

I saw him play back in the day when the Angels wore halos on their ball caps.

Anyone else remember when Jeter came up, the press reported that NY had TWO great shortstops breaking into the big leagues. Jeter was the second most heralded SS, behind, wait for it...Ray Ordonez.
