High school bans Alabama coaches

Nick Saban's request to visit Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas was denied by coach George Smith, who noted it was nothing personal. After Mike Shula was fired, Smith sent a letter to Alabama's athletic director and president stating Bama's coaches weren't welcome on his campus because of how Shula's dismissal ''was handled.'' Saban, who recruited South Florida well as Louisiana State's coach, didn't have a Dade or Broward player in his first Bama signing class.

I think Mike Shula was the last recruit Bama got from St. Thomas Aquinas. The coach has the right I guess to do whatever he wants in regards to who he allows at his school but I think he does his kids a disservice by not making all options available to them. It's supposed to be about the kids, not his personal feelings on how a firing was handled.

TideintheNW:

You got it EXACTLY correct... this is about the kids and their possible future in college football and beyond. How is the HS coach advancing the best interests of his players by banning BAMA?

May 21, 2007  08:13 PM ET

If I had a son who was a prospect at this high school... I would be meeting with an attorney.

May 21, 2007  08:54 PM ET

how selfish can the coach be by not allowing his players to be recruited by alabama because of his own personal opinion.

May 21, 2007  09:04 PM ET

Bama fans sure seem to like a court fight. I would question any black athlete who has major college ablitiy-who chooses Bama. Huge Rebel Flag on interstate- no my son wouldn't go there!

You four Alabama inbreds don't know the first thing about high school football in South Florida or it's coach. St Thomas probably would have beat Alabama last year and there probably isn't a coach in the country that does more for his players. He isn't doing them a disservice by not letting them go study pig farming in the good ole south, he is actually giving them a chance to get a quality education and make it to the pros. How desperate are you Bama fans that you want to sue the coach and bask in the glory of your Spring Game. Good luck next year.

May 21, 2007  09:46 PM ET

"Pig Farming"? I'm an Auburn fan, so I could care less if someone impunes alerbammer. But dogging the entire state based on some outdated stereotype is ridiculous. Who do you cheer for, USC or Notre Dame. Go ask your 300 pound wife to park your minivan full of soccer brats, you slack-jawed, limp-wristed, hillary-loving, pale-skinned vegetarian sissy.

How does that feel?

May 21, 2007  09:51 PM ET

four alabama inbreds huh? well you don't sound much smarter you auburn idiot, or florida jerk...you win a few games and youi get real cocky! first and foremost...it is about the kids, not how a coach was fired, if that's the case why didn't he ban auburn coaches after that mess with petrino and louisville? what about miami? you think coker was given a fair shake. so before you start calling us Alabama folks inbreds get your facts together.

why would any high school want his players to go play for someone that has no loyalty and will sell out in a couple of years? i think everyone is overlooking it might be a case of principle more than a case of revenge. In addition to the racial slurs saban said earlier this year.

May 21, 2007  10:51 PM ET

1) Shula, former graduate of STA - family ties - enough said.
2) this coach is making a statement, it will not prevent UA officials from doing their homework and going to ballgames. Any players film will be available through a plethora of media outlets (yes, look that up). I am sure if the player has designs on UA, the coach has no authority to keep him from signing there.
3) Complaints would have to have grounds, else it would be dismissed. Since this would be local venue, no judge would let a suit like that past a Motion for Summary Judgment.
4) UA needs to learn a lesson regarding public relations. They paid 4mil for a coach who came with baggage. He is from a 1 horse town and now he can't rely on being the only show in town like he had at LSU. Saban has had 2 noteworthy blunders since his hire (lying about the job/or interest and the coonass comment).

May 21, 2007  11:32 PM ET

Maybe some don't know how recruiting works, but if the kid wants to go to bama he can still get there. He can still use his high school equipment to make highlight films and send them to bama and he and bama can talk via phone, letters, text, and in home visits. The HS coach isn't limiting the choices his kid has, just making bama work harder. This isn't unchartered territory my hs did this on a lower level. If a coach does not think the institute is best for his players he can tell them not to come, dont cry if you get your toes stepped on.

May 21, 2007  11:55 PM ET

Saban can still recruit these kids off campus, but the general vibe amongst the football players in the most fertile HS football grounds in the country is that they don't want to have anything to do with Saban. I am sure Bama fans love Saban, but just about everyone in SoFla views him as a corrupt snake.

May 22, 2007  02:43 AM ET

Don't think for one minute that Alabama won't get in there somehow! Hell all the money they spend on players, they will find a way to get any player they want whether a player is from Alaska or Miami! Believe me, in Mississippi they always steal away the best players at the last minute. I can say they have been caught by the NCAA and they will not press the issue. Unrelated though I need to bring it up: How in the heck does Tennessee always avoid getting caught? Anyway, this is purely a case of " sour grapes " b/c of the way Saban left the Dolphins high and dry ( kind of like Ricky Williams did EXCEPT HE WAS H)

May 22, 2007  05:51 AM ET

I banned my daughter from marrying a Bama supporter. GO VOLS!!!

May 22, 2007  06:58 AM ET

Greetings Morons:

1.) Shula did not graduate from St. Thomas Aquinas. He graduated from Miami Columbus High School.
2.) Just because a high school coach bans collegiate coaches from a campus, it doesn't mean that a particular player on that high school team can't be recruited by that college. College coaches can still contact the player at home, obtain game films, etc. Bama will still recruit qualified players from STA; be rest assured.
3.) There are a lot of great players that come out of STA. Bama will still secure the services of some of those players, no less than they have had in previous years.
4.) If a player at STA wants to go to Bama, he'll go to Bama regardless of what the coach at STA does or doesn't do.

May 22, 2007  09:00 AM ET

Maybe the ban is more to protect the cheerleaders of STA...Those Bama boys are always trying to add to their gene pools before their kid's eyes slant too bad. Hell, maybe the coach just doesn't like banjo music.

May 22, 2007  09:51 AM ET

Sorry but alowing a coach, or not allowing a coach, to check out a HS recruit isn't about the kids...AT ALL people so don't kid yourself. These schools (read: coaches) have themselves and their programs as the number 1 priority, in their own self-interest, as few of these kids even make it to the NFL.

So to me this issue is about respect. St Thomas coach is obviously loyal to Shula...good for him. Perhaps he's looking for a college coaching job...who knows. Either way loyalty is a good thing.

Screw Saban....enough said.

I don't want good recruits going to Bama anyway. Send em all to Gainesville....GO GATORS!!!!!!

p.s. Pig farming is a very respectable profession. Ever heard of bacon? ham perhaps? or pork chops? pulled pork? This one magical animal needs lots of tender lovin' care to get em nice and plump-n-juicy so don't knock pig farming cause its probably more detailed and scientific than any of your jobs :-)
