07:35 AM ET 02.19 | After hitting bombs in the batting cage, David Ortiz dropped a few, too. Viewed objectively, Ortiz has been underpaid by baseball standards throughout his career. He has banked roughly $107 million since 2007, and in that time has made six All-Star teams and finished as high as fourth in the MVP voting. He'll make $15 million this year and would like $15 million next year, too. He doesn't find either number unreasonable. ... "Guys putting up my numbers, they're making $25, $30 million. I'm not asking for that. I'm asking for half of it. And they're still bitching about it? (Expletive) them. I'm tired of hearing them talk (expletive) about me when I talk about my contract. Hey, every time I talk about my contract, I earn it, (expletive). So don't be giving me that (expletive)."

Being underpaid compared to the rest of the market is on Papi, not the Sox.

Zack Greinke, Cliff Lee and Ryan Howard are the only players making at least $25M in 2014.

It must be Howard that's pissing him off.

Exactly! Don't sign the thing if you don't like it.

It's not bad pay for part time work.

QUOTE(#11):

There's no question that he should be paid less as a DH, but I agree with him that he has been underpaid through his career relative to his production. For those who are saying that what he has been paid is on him because he signed the contract, you're absolutely right. However, I think he's knowingly given "hometown" discounts out of loyalty to the team and I don't think asking for a little loyalty in return is such a horrible thing. He's not asking for some multi-year, mega contract; he's asking for one more year at below market rate. After his season last year, including being World Series MVP, I don't think that's too much to ask.If he doesn't get an extension, I expect the situation to escalate to the point where the Red Sox will begin their typical PR smear campaign on outgoing personnel and I wouldn't be surprised if details of Ortiz's PED usage are leaked.

I wish the Bosox would just give him another year to keep the peace, but that's not their style.
They gotta give Lucchino something to do before he starts getting involved in baseball decisions (like bringing V Wrap in)...arranging for union officials to get jumped and putting last season's hot dogs in the freezer for opening day isn't enough to keep him busy. Now, he can put out press releases about Papi being a PED user, arrange for his family in the Dominican to be roughed up, key Ortiz' Bentley, etc.

This has become a spring time ritual with Papi anytime the subject of his contract comes up.

According to Cots, Greinke isn't making $25MM this year.Anyway, in this context, I think it's appropriate to use contracts' average annual value, in which case you need to add Kershaw, Verlander, Hamilton, and Hernandez to the list. I'd also make the case than A-Rod's contract should be considered as well.

And which of those are contributing the same numbers as Ortiz?
