This combine's breakout star

07:29 AM ET 02.20 | For some, the NFL's combine can be used as a springboard from relative obscurity. Last year I predicted the stock for EJ Manuel and Cordarrelle Patterson would soar coming out of the combine. Both players entered Indy with second-day grades. Both, because of their showings, were taken in the first round of the draft. This year, the player who I believe will make the biggest jump is UCLA OG Xavier Su'a-Filo. Su'a-Filo has an interesting backstory, having served a two-year Mormon mission that split up his college career. He started 13 games at left tackle for the Bruins as a freshman in 2009 (becoming the first UCLA player ever to start from Day 1), was gone for the next two years on the mission in Florida and Alabama, then returned to become UCLA's full-time starter at left guard.

I love draft prognositacors who point out "last year I predicted". These guys make about 200 predictions each year. If one or two turn out to be correct, they never let you forget it

Mike Mayock, or someone with deep ties to the Mormon Church?

So now they call it a Mormon Mission when a player cannot keep up his grades and has to leave school.

How stupid do you have to be to get a college scholarship, play on season of college football then give up the scholarship to wander around in Florida and Alabama.

So now Florida and Alabama are given 3rd world status. Where evangelicals and snake handling ministers can be converted to a more corrupt version of christianity called Mormonism. Was there an outbreak of Malaria, Typhoid fever, or was he rounding up a bunch of orphans for wealthy mormons to buy and use a child laborers in their magic underwear factory ?

You would have thought he could have done that without leaving UCLA. Think of all the Sun Worshipers he could have saved by handing out magic underpants, or illegals he could have helped across the border and given jobs to in Mormon owned businesses.

Click on the link under the blurb and you'll see it was written by Gil Brandt.

Also, since the guy was born and raised in American Fork, UT -- which is pretty much all Mormon -- I'd say the mission thing is pretty legit.

I never doubted that he was a Mormon. I was saying he was a dumb Mormon. Why would the Mormon church make him serve his mission work during a college scholarship, why would he go?, I think he couldn't make the grades at the time. Maybe BYU figured UCLA would give up on him and not invite him back and then they would get a good transfer ?

If is for the fans that don't get to see the skill exercises during pro days. I agree with Steve Mariucci that the NFL Network should show some of the out takes of players interviews with potential teams coaches, he says many of them are very funny.

The nice thing for players that are invited and don't have a good combine, they can redeem themselves at their Pro Days.
