Mets through with Drew

07:35 AM ET 02.20 | No matter how much payroll the Mets free up, signing free-agent shortstop Stephen Drew could be a longshot. Quite simply, the front office is not sold on Drew's ability to produce at a significantly higher level than that of incumbent Ruben Tejada, according to a team executive familiar with general manager Sandy Alderson's thinking. So unless Drew's asking price drops significantly, the Mets will not pursue him. "At the numbers he's looking for, we don't think he's worth it compared with what we have," the source said. The executive went on to say that "there's no guarantee Drew's going to be as good" as he was last season and that the Mets "don't think Ruben's going to be that bad." Drew, 30, hit .253 with 13 home runs and a .777 OPS in 124 games for the Red Sox last season.

They can get roughly the same output from Tejeda

Tejada is a lot cheaper and Drew sucked in 2011-12...given how bad they're likely to be, probably doesn't make sense to try to upgrade with Drew on a short term deal. Might make more sense to see if Tejada can snap back and maybe improve on his better seasons, he's still only 24 and was decent in '11-12.

They won't contend this year. Beat bet is to see what they have and develop it.

Wouldn't surprise me one bit, and probably wouldn't be a bad thing at the right price.

The way things appear to be heading, he and Boras will be camped out on Cherington's front steps begging for a contract.

i don't doubt one bit,,,

It brings joy to my little black heart that Scot Borass loses out on this.
Never thought it would happen but getting Drew back would be nice too.

We all know how this is going to end. Sometime in the next couple of weeks, Derek Jeter will announce he can't play shortstop effectively anymore and move to third. The media will have a collective ****, pronouncing Jeter the "greatest human being ever, even greater than Jesus." Meanwhile, Scott Boras will do to the Yankees what he ALWAYS does to the Yankees -- fleece them hard. Drew will sign a 3 or 4 year deal for an unheard of amount of money and the rest of us will all shake our heads.

That's a very depressing thought!

Good for the Mets......

Drew and Boras seem to be overplaying their hands on this one. It's going to be tough under the new system to get a decent one year bridge contract after receiving a qualifying offer. This is going to get interesting because I'm not sure Drew was worth 13 million per year let alone 13 million plus a draft pick.
