Isles holding their breath for Tavares

07:41 AM ET 02.20 | When the Islanders returned to work on Wednesday, the team could be forgiven if it's attention was in Sochi -- but for all the wrong reasons. John Tavares suffered a knee injury in Canada's 2-1 quarterfinal win over Latvia on Wednesday, ending his Olympics and possibly his NHL season. He will be examined in Russia and have a MRI exam, but a source indicated that the initial exam on Tavares' left knee "does not look good." Tavares tried to sneak by a check from Latvia's Arturs Kulda in the second period, but the hit appeared to pin Tavares' left leg awkwardly against the boards. Tavares tried to stay on the bench but went off to dressing room. ... [Tavares] is the unquestioned star and leader of the Islanders. If the news is bad, the last six weeks of the season will feel an awful lot longer.

They're not even a point a game team with him. How bad will they be without him?

Bad enough to beat the Stars.

Again...

Gone til next year.If the idea of these Olympics were to grow the popularity of the game, it's been a terrible effort thus far and the fact that star players are being injured in the name of this non-existent growth can only mean owners are shutting that 5-ringed door next go-around.

I can only hope.

A stunning loss by Canada yesterday would have been sublime. The one game format is stupid too. That's not hockey. Hockey needs "best ofs"...

Dear Mr Bettman,
Although a Ranger fan, I am first and foremost a hockey fan. (something you might want to try by the way, being a fan of the game you are destroying...maybe you'll do things differently and not get booed everywhere you go) I just want to thank you, NBC and of course, the IOC for getting one of the best young talents in the game (Taveres) injured for the season because of your insidious need for ratings. Please quit now and let someone who at least likes the game run it....and get the professionals out of the Olympics

I wonder if there is legal recourse?

Bettman can be criticized for a lot but not this Olympics. He and the owners wanted no part of Sochi. This was all about the players and their want to be there. Going forward I think the NHL has seen the last of the Olympics hopefully opening the door for a World Cup.

Make the best player on the Latvian team play for the Isles?

Agreed.

One other thing. The Buttgoblin took a lot of heat on these boards a few years ago because he signed a TV rights deal with an obscure cable channel called versus. Now its NBC Sports and the ratings aren't all that bad. Credit where due.

The Russia US game was the highest rated event NBC Sports has ever had. I suspect tomorrows game will get them even a higher rating. Go Canada

And the players will want to play in 2018. Again.

Repaired.

But if it's a one and done format I'm opposed to that too.

That's the problem with all these countries playing hockey.

In 1972 the games against Sweden and the Czechs were afterthoughts, filler. The 8 games versus the Soviets were the meat an potatoes....
