09:01 AM ET 02.22 | Free agent slugger Nelson Cruz is close to a deal with the Orioles, according to people familiar with the deal. The Cruz signing, once finalized, would be the second major signing within days for Baltimore, which is obviously going for it now. The Orioles will have one of the better lineups in baseball once Cruz is in the fold. There are still a couple issues to be resolved, according to sources, though a deal looks extremely likely. The Orioles also had been talking to Kendrys Morales, another free agent hitter. Morales had other opportunities, though, including the Mariners and possibly the Pirates. Reports suggested Morales was a strong possibility throughout the day Friday, but Orioles decision makers were "split" on Cruz vs. Morales, Roch Kubatko of MASN @masnRoch reported Friday night. One possible difference is that Cruz may not have had many other alternatives.

Stupid signing IMO. Orioles have enough offense, they need pitching. Dan Duquette did the same thing in Boston, put a nice lineup on the field, but other than getting Pedro, he didn't acquire enough pitching.

Was thinking the same thing as I read this story.

I think it's significant that the Rangers, who know Cruz best, declined on anything more than a one-year qualifying offer to Cruz.

Cruz is 34 years old and his previous production may/may not have been partly attributed to PED use. He's a great team guy but I see red flags surrounding a multi-year deal.

Oh well, we can start calling Baltimore "Texas East." Lots of former Rangers on that team.

What is it with the tight wad Oriolres cornering the market with all these class B free agents at top dollar. What is it the Forest Gump said, "dumb is, as dumb gets"', oh, now it makes sense?

The Ubaldo signing could actually work out well for them.

I do like that FN continues to use a picture of Cruz in street clothes, given his 50 game suspension last year.

If you know how much your best friends ex-wife I making you're probably banging her...haha. Yes,I know this is a troll thread but it made me laugh. ANYWAY....I'm just thoroughly disgusted by this. Man I miss how the O's used to do business. Brings me back to Albert "Don't call me Joey" Bell. Not fond memories.

It was a mistake. a one time thing. He was just trying to work through an injury,he regrets it terribly, same as Braun, and he apologizes and just want to move on and regain your faith in him....
