09:57 AM ET 02.22 | Almost eight weeks ago against Philadelphia in a do-or-die regular-season finale, the Cowboys lost as Kyle Orton made his first start for Dallas. Whether it will be his last could depend on his desire to return to the team. Word has trickled through the Valley Ranch grapevine, according to a source within the club, that the backup quarterback isn't sure he wants to play next season. Another member of the organization said he was unaware of Orton's plans for the future. And a third was 99 percent confident that Orton, 31, would not walk away from the team because of financial disincentives. The news comes less than two months after Orton filled in for an injured Tony Romo, the 33-year-old veteran whose recovery from a herniated disk requiring surgery has become a story line this off-season.

This is tragic.

Because they are so close to winning it all....or at all?

If his heart ain't in it... Then get him out of here.

Orton's scheduled to make $4.3 million to sit the bench. Dallas needs to get rid of him.

In the words of my illustrious governor, "Adios m0f0."

I didn't notice that he played in 2013

He started Week 17 vs the Eagles and the announcers salivated over the high release of his throwing motion.

With the ensuing cap problems I foresee a 4rth or 5th round backup this season. That's OK though, I also foresee a much higher first round pick in 2015.

This now opens the door for you know who...Tebow....

Just remember the last QB Jerry chose with a high pick was Quincy Carter.

This would be a staggering loss that would shake the team, nay, the league to its core.

Won't matter who's QB if JJ successfully gets the playoff structure modified so that everybody gets a playoff spot.

QB seems to be quite an issue. Do they dare put all their eggs in the Romo basket after 2 back ops? Or do they jump up to the top of the draft board???

I'm sticking with my 6-10. That could be good for a top ten pick.

Whoa! The whole story makes noooo sense. If he were to retire he would OWE the cowboys money from his signing bonus.......smells fishy. Very fishy....Remember, you are NOT retired because someone says so, only when you file those papers with the League office....

That was my thought. Orton "retires" freeing up that cap money and Jerry pays him off under the table.

In a great QB draft to boot

Ya have to wonder about it. I suppose he could offer him a high paying front office job for a year. But the DeBartolo pay them under the table system works too. I think Steve Young still gets a check in the mail every month from the 49ers.

wouldn't be the first time there was that fish smell coming out of JJ's office.
