NHL weighing Olympics risks, rewards

09:52 AM ET 02.23 | NHL team owners and executives opposed to continued participation in the Games will use John Tavares' injury -- and those sustained by Mats Zuccarello, Paul Martin and Fedor Tyutin -- as Exhibit A in case against shutting down for three weeks every four years in order to accommodate the Olympics and the professional athletes who are committed to participating in them. There are risks and rewards associated with the NHL's inclusion in the Olympics. Injuries are an obvious risk. The NHL hasn't yet been able to quantify the rewards that come from its league's and its athletes' partnership with sport's quadrennial global celebration. That doesn't mean the rewards don't exist, only that Sixth Avenue hasn't been able to figure out how to calculate, maximize and capitalize on them. It seems the league has an irrational fear of exploring the international market.

This is stupid. There are players who get hurt walking down stairs, clipping their hedges, playing with their kids.. will the NHL try and stop those activities too? I am an Islanders fan and as much as its going to suck watching the last part of this season without Tavares these players should be able to play for their countries in the olympics. If we start sending players in Juniors and a top prospect gets hurt and possibly ends his career will we then start sending high school kids?

Leave it to history - the players are always going to want to go, though. If they want it in the o-lays move it to the summer games - the ice couldn't be any worse than this time was.

i was listening to Bettman the other day on the radio and he said that 40% of ticket sales and 70% of revenue from the olympics comes from hockey so unless they can make that up somehow its never going to happen unfortunately

And therein lies the problem doesn't it?

The Olympics needs the NHL way more than the NHL needs the Olympics.

Finland was standing there with such a sour look, almost like they were going to be taken out back after.

Swedes didn't look that unhappy, though.

I believe the NHL will be back, in the end. Congrats to everybody. Nice medal haul for North America!!!

All in all a very successful games, and not one single Muslim exploded. Hats off to the Russians on security.

I would not like to see the best player from my favorite NHL team get a season ending injury at the 'Pics. On the other hand, this is far better than the typical all star game played at 1/4 intensity.

Ultimately, though, it is still all about the Stanley Cup for me. Viewing Olympics hockey thru the lens of an NHL fan complicates matters. I have to admit that, despite my best patriotic intentions, I was rooting for Rask (sporting a Bruin on his goalie mask) against Kane, the Blackhawk, on those two penalty shots.

The I.O.C. has one choice only - revenue share , or watch the games viewership drop , either way they give up money.

Only thing I take away from the last week and a half is that the rest of the world got to see the quality of player Jamie Benn is. This experience will only help him.

Beware the Stars. We will be back!

NHL players do not belong in the O-lame-pics! Period! Every NHL team rewards these guys with huge contracts to play for them and to entertain their fans, not to trot off to some far away place and get a knee blown out or some other injury that effectively puts an end to their hopes of a playoff spot.

Send the amateurs! Let them make a name for themselves!
