07:35 AM ET 02.24 | While Red Sox fans ponder what the left side of their infield might look like in 2014, there may be a surprise candidate in Mike Carp. Carp saw how much learning a new position helped [Daniel Nava], and so he approached Brian Butterfield with an idea the first day of workouts. How about a few ground balls at third base? "It's something that I'm familiar with but not completely familiar with," said Carp, who played a dozen games at third in the Gulf Coast League and Single-A South Atlantic League while in the Mets system nearly a decade ago. "The way our coaching staff prepares us, if I can get with them and shadow Will [Middlebrooks] and watch those guys do their business, who's to say I can't get a few at-bats at third this year?"

Versatility is always a good thing, but I wouldn't expect too much from Carp at third.

And Lavarnway is getting reps at 1st. With this emphasis on versatility, I wonder if Belichek is vacationing in Fort Myers?

Another slow day in paradise...... Ask Jose O'Quendo how long you can play by being able to play at multiple positions...

Especially one who had an exceptional year at the plate coming off the bench.

Absolutely, that's why Big Papi was seen taking some fly balls in CF.

Did you see the one time he started to steal a base and stopped half way then finished stealing it without a throw..... fun times.....

Third is pretty easy to play, as long as you got cat like reflexes and the ability to dive

And you aren't afraid of getting hit in the chops......

I remember that, he needed to stop halfway to catch his breath, then finish.
