07:43 AM ET 02.24 | Simply, for Team Sweden, the timing couldn't have been much worse. Washington Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom was pulled from Sweden's lineup shortly before the Olympic gold medal hockey game against Canada on Sunday after he tested positive for a banned substance found in his allergy medication. ... Given that the positive test resulted from a common allergy medication and wasn't intended for performance-enhancing benefit, NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said, "We do not anticipate there being any consequences relative to Nicklas's ability to participate" in Capitals games. It is uncertain whether Backstrom will receive his silver medal. The IIHF, international hockey's governing body, took it back to its offices in Zurich to await a final ruling from the IOC on Backstrom's test result.

Bet if he sicks Grandma on the IOC, she'll beat it out of them. I wouldn't want to tangle with her.

BTW, Otis, count me as a new Jamie Benn fan. You nailed that a long time ago. He was awesome the entire tournament.

On the positive test, come on, when did we lose all sense of perspective and common sense? The guy has been penalized enough by being forced to sit out the gold medal game.

Agreed. There's a book out called, "The Death of Reason" this would fit right in there.

I'm really happy the kid had that opportunity. It's only going to make him a better player.

Selfishly - that benefits my hopes for the Stars being relavent once again.

"Backstrom may never see his medal"

"Sniff" is right. I'm getting all misty-eyed and broken up over it!

C'mon! These guys and their handlers aren't a bunch of 'know-nothing' idiots. They're very well versed on the rules. They know the score going in. Or, at least they should, as they all get a complete list of all banned substances in advance. Actually, anybody can get it from the IOC web site. Yet some dope-heads think the rules don't apply to them and think they can circumvent them. Screw him, I say! No medal for him ... if for no other reason than being a first class moron!

You're just mad because the conduit for ridding yourselves of under-performing, over-rated defensemen is shut down.

But - at least the Pens don't suck like the Redskins.

Claritin. That's what the Swedes are saying. The IOC didn't reveal what they actually found in his piss.

The Washington Post reports they've found elevated levels of pseudoephedrine, which definitely is a performance enhancing substance.

The article says, "Backstrom has taken Zyrtec-D, a permitted drug although it contains pseudoephedrine, for seven years to treat sinusitis. Pseudoephedrine is allowed by the IOC as long as levels do not exceed 150 micrograms per milliliter and is not tested outside of competition. Backstrom???s level was 190, according to Aubry."

The 190 count means only one thing. He took extra pseudoephedrine pills, beyond what Zirtec-D contains. Definitely not allowed. The letter "D" in all allergy meds means it contains pseudoephedrine. If you're going to compete in a two week tournament like the O-lame-pics, you'd be well advised to leave the "D" part of Zyrtec at home. You'll survive just fine without it.
