Tight end wants out of Georgia

Georgia tight end NaDerris Ward has requested a release from his scholarship and, at the moment, intends to transfer at the end of the semester, according to a university spokesman. It is not known where the sophomore tight end will transfer. But in all likelihood it will be closer to his home in Oakland, Calif. Ward is the third hit taken by the tight end group in two months. First tight end coach Dave Johnson left for West Virginia. Then recruit Dwayne Allen changed his commitment and went with Clemson over Georgia on Signing Day. And now Ward.

It doesn't say specifically why he's leaving. He was injury prone, and Bruce Figgins did get more playing time and catches. It's notlike UGA is ten deep at TE though.

He better not go to Clemson!

All I would say to him is, Bye...Don't wanna stay, then leave...Yall be ready for the other schools fans to come on here and start trashing UGA now...

Sometimes its not as good of a fit as you first thought, these things happen....

It's an odd time to bail when GA is predicted to be a top 5 team this season.

He must think he's worth more than the playing time he's going to get.

Transfer to Cal. That's close enough.

February 27, 2008  10:36 AM ET

Playing time might have something to do with it, but maybe he just didn't fit in, or some kids get really home sick.

I hope he finds a school he can do well at both on the football team & in the classroom.

I would imagine it's hard to ride the bench & be so far away from home. I wouldn't know personally because I was never athletic enough to make the team at USC. But I was a hell of a student - socializer.

I guess the beating this guy took at the touchdown celebrations against Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl caught up to him. baby.

Yes, if you want to keep your tight end then the sooner you get out of Georgia the better....

This move makes no sense, He was going to get a chance to play this year. If he transfers he sits this year which makes it even stranger b/c Tripp Chandler (the starter) is a senior and Ward would be the no.1 next year. This could be a big blow for UGA b/c if Ward leaves they have the often injured Chandler, sophmore Bruce Figguns and true freshman Bryce Roos and thats it. Aron White has been moved to wr since hes only 220.

So moving back to Calf. is safer??? Ever think maybe he's missing something that he CAN'T find in Georgia??

February 27, 2008  01:20 PM ET

back in December, Ward told a reporter from our local paper that he had planned to stay in Athens, even though he felt homesick a lot. apparently, he has lost two relatives to acts of violence since leaving Oakland.....he probably feels like he NEEDS to go home.

February 27, 2008  01:28 PM ET

He is going closer to home because of the family issues listed above, but the only school I've seen mentioned is Oregon. Wherever he goes good luck, Georgia will be fine. Go Dawgs!!!

February 27, 2008  05:53 PM ET

My understanding is the grndmother who raised him hsa cancer and he wants to be closer to her. I say good for him for putting family first.

February 27, 2008  11:32 PM ET

G'luck to him...hopefully it won't be too big a blow to the team.

February 28, 2008  07:58 AM ET

ummmm... "I am on one of the hottest teams in College Football, I am going to get playing time in 2008, so it only makes sense to leave to guarantee that I continue to sit on the bench." I guess he is afraid to play!!!!!! Who wants a sissy on their team - see ya, wouldn't want to be ya?

February 28, 2008  05:09 PM ET

Yeah, why would you want to stay at a school that regularly produced tight ends like Ben Watson, Randy McMichael, Leonard Pope and other NFL draftees.

He's got family and other reasons, fair enough. I don't begrudge him that move.

Young man, you are making a big mistake.
