Saban on Tide's off-field issues

Alabama players appear to be at a crossroads. They must make better judgments, especially late at night when they're out, or coach Nick Saban said he is going "to eliminate those situations, so we don't have any of these issues in the future." Eight players have now been arrested in Saban's 14-month tenure. Yet he is not at the point where he will institute a curfew or a ban on frequenting the Strip in Tuscaloosa. He will issue punishments only to change behavior, a method that does not always include a suspension. But in the aftermath of defensive captain Rashad Johnson's arrest on a charge of disorderly conduct, Saban was clear: "It's a problem. I've said `enough is enough' and we're trying to fix it."

I am a lifelong fan of Alabama football... but have grown weary and frustrated with all the headlines. You can not pick up the paper it seems without reading of yet another player busted for late night indiscretions.

Alabama of course is not alone in this trend. Ten of the twelve teams in the conference have lost players in the last year due to serious lapses in judgement. From Tennessee, to Florida... from LSU to Alabama... collectively all programs in the SEC really need to take a harsh stance on this and impliment a no tolerance policy. If you get arrested, you're off the team... period....

those swamp brothers might be fast as hell and loaded with size and talent....but they sure are stupid as s%@t!

Nick Saban: "How dare you tarnish the GREAT STATE OF ALABAMA you jababbies!!!!!!!! From here on out, anyone gets into trouble, and I have to invoke a token punishment to create the illusion that I care about kids? I'll shot yo' mamas!!"

February 27, 2008  11:04 AM ET

come on everybody.....if this was a cane thread u would be callin them THUG U.why not treat bama with the same criticism??? TEXAS & BAMA take the cake now on trouble.. GO CANES!!! shannon would suspend the guy for a game at least ,saban will do nothing....just like he did for the FINS

February 27, 2008  12:02 PM ET

The CRIMESOME TIDE!!! Do not worry bama jamas, Nicky would never do anything to actually hurt the teams chances of winning....Just some stuff that sounds good. And do not worry, he will never ever have a persons charachter stop him from fawning over and signing a top recruit...
But really, you nothing on Miami or anybody else..But you knew that..

February 27, 2008  12:04 PM ET

Saban only cares about wins, he could give a crap about the players he recruits. of course there will be off the field issues with this guy. if he were a true college coach he would be ensuring that his players aren't running around like morons away from the game.

it just makes you wonder how much class these players are going to?????

Bama fans should get rid of this guy. You know he's going to leave you for the next big job once that comes around right?????? just ask LSU and Miami Dolphins.

February 27, 2008  12:16 PM ET

He'll get in order.

I agree with browardcane. No one calls any other school thugs. Miami is getting one bad wrap.

They are sworn enemies, TRUTH would give her a Columbian necktie if he could get away with it!

February 27, 2008  03:45 PM ET

Now I understand why Alabama recruits more players than they have scholarships available-makes sense.
