With a manager who "led by example" last year, and an organization that showed how much they care about DUIs with how that was all handled last year, I am just so so shocked that a player in that organization would now be ignorant enough to get behind the wheel of a car when intoxicated...

Good for the St. Louis Cardinals!!
Finally a team does the right thing sending a strong signal that as a respectable franchise they do not wish their reputation and good name soiled or damaged by someone who engaged in DUI and assault. It's a refreshingly encouraging attitude and one that I personally applaud. I wish ALL MLB teams would adopt more scrutiny to their players, whether they are everyday starters, stars, utility players, or even spring training intitees. Kudos!!

I agree EastCoastKeith. Last year had enough turmoil with alcohol related problems. It kinda feels like crap, here we go again!!! I'm really glad they released him. With the substance abuse thing last year we know this man has problems. It just sucks that they still have to pay for his contract this year and a buy out for 09.

He missed a month during the 2007 season to go through detox & rehab, but then gets a DUI a couple months later. That is yet another example of the stronghold that alcohol can have on an addict. Best of luck getting your life put back together, Scott.

"I think it's a consistent message about what the team represents." - Tony LaRussa
What a fraud this guy is. While I absolutely agree with the Cards releasing Spezio (and the worst facial hair in all of professional sports), why didn't the team cut LaRussa loose after his own DUI? And the message is a mixed one at best coming from a guy who keeps harping about how much he'd love to have steroid abuser Barry Bonds on the team.
Poor Albert Pujols. He's stuck in this mess with a team going absolutely nowhere.

UGH. What a waste. Life is so tough, isn't it Spezio? A MLB contract, hot women, lots of money. I understand why you would drink. Loser.
This season is goign to be worse than last year! Oh well. Go Cards!

The guy has obviously has been drunk for years. First clue: He dyed his silly chinny chin chin hair red. No one but a drunk would do that.

LaRusa is steeped in hypocrisy.
Wonder what would happen if this didn't involve a "Utility infielder."

For the love of god you're rich! Call a cab! Call a towtruck! The Leyritz thing was a couple of months ago. How'd that turn out? If you don't want to admit you have a drinking problem fine, admit you have a driving problem and quit that.

Um... Spiezo wasn't just drunk (although that's bad in of itself)... he has SIX charges against him.

The story is pretty gruesome...gets hammered and wrecks his car and then flees the scene...runs to one of his neighbors house and then pukes on the guys rug and then punches him
Alcoholics drink, its what they do, but JEEZ...puking on a guys rug and then beating him up...thats not very grateful...

I would rather LaRussa would defend Spiezio as a guy who needs help than to throw him under the bus and defend cheating steroid-users such as McGwire. I understand sending a message because of what happened with Hancock last year, but it's wrong to make such a judgment on this guy, but to defend guys such as Big Mac.

"Orange County Superior Court issued a warrant on Tuesday charging Spiezio with driving under the influence; driving under the influence with a blood-alcohol level of 0.08 percent or more; hit and run; aggravated assault; assault; and battery."
This coupled with missing an large part of last year due to substance abuse is well beyond a DUI arrest. They gave him his second and third chances. He blew it. Spezio had to go.
