Detroit targets free agents

One player the Lions will target in free agency is a former teammate of Dwight Smith's in Tampa -- cornerback Brian Kelly. Smith wasn't the only player to visit the Lions on Wednesday. Right tackle L.J. Shelton, who was released by the Dolphins, and middle linebacker Jonathan Vilma, who has permission by the Jets to seek a trade, almost met with Detroit officials.

Detriot would go a long way to get MLB J. Vilma.

February 28, 2008  07:14 AM ET

Smith has a two year deal, Kelly would be a great addition for two solid seasons........Shelton is okay but this is short term as well.

February 28, 2008  07:28 AM ET

Yeah Vilma would fit perfectly in Detroit. Millen would be wise to find out what the cost would be because Vilma is an ideal 4-3 linebacker.

i agree wit america's legend

February 28, 2008  07:52 AM ET

any move the Lions make can only help.
Now if they only had a QB

February 28, 2008  07:54 AM ET

Sweet lord... how many more Buc retreads are we going to get on this team???

February 28, 2008  08:16 AM ET

I might be the only one, but I still think its not our QB thats a problem, its our O-Line. Who can throw when they dont have time or a run game?

Look at teams like Denver, they are a 1000+ yard running game machine every year, and they've used Lions retreads to do it in the past.

If you called Andersen being a force as QB last year, raise your hand. The main difference between the Browns last year and two years ago is Joe Thomas.

Get a line. Unfortunately Lions can't somehow grab Jake Long this year. I would love to see this same offense with a line.

February 28, 2008  08:17 AM ET

That being said, I would love to get tougher on Defense. Anyone know what the status of talks with Denver are?

February 28, 2008  08:47 AM ET

Take Vilma give us Roy Williams........

February 28, 2008  09:38 AM ET

the lions need alot of work before they can even think about contending.

February 28, 2008  09:58 AM ET

Kwame Kilpatrick is worse than Matt Millen.

February 28, 2008  09:59 AM ET

Which team is going to trade-rape the Lions this year?

February 28, 2008  10:01 AM ET

First Millen went to the lame black jerseys to try to emulate the Raiders. He succeeded. Since Millen took over both the Lions and Raiders have been the worst teams in football. Now he wants to transform the Lions into the Bucs. Great move Millen except the Bucs Millen is going after are past their prime. For the love of sports, FIRE MILLEN and take Marinelli, Rodgers and the rest of the CFL rejects with you!

February 28, 2008  10:04 AM ET

I think they need to get another wideout in the draft.

February 28, 2008  10:08 AM ET

I hope they use their second round pick on someone with a history of knee injuries.

February 28, 2008  10:19 AM ET

Vilma is a Pro Bowler in a 4-3 next year. You heard it here first.

February 28, 2008  10:31 AM ET

I have been saying that about Jonathan Vilma since he was drafted. He is 6-0 240/235lbs......That doesn't translate to the 3-4 Scheme well. He also ran a 4.55 at the Combine when he was there. Which means he is more suited for the 4-3 so he can get to the ball untouched by offensive lineman.

February 28, 2008  11:27 AM ET

Jonathan Vilma "almost" met with Detroit officials. And I "almost" screwed Jessica Alba last night..

February 28, 2008  11:35 AM ET

TheJazz:
Vilma was in Detroit for a physical. Don't let the bad reporting in this article fool you.

February 28, 2008  12:04 PM ET

If we could get Vilma and draft a speedy LB in the 2-3 round (Crable??), then yuor LB's are set, but what the hell do you do about your DL??? You're relying on Cody and Redding, with DeVries and Smith on the outside???
