Tech coach apologizes to mom

If you watched Georgia Tech's nationally-televised game at Duke Wednesday night, you might think that it didn't look good when guard Matt Causey whacked his head on the floor and sustained a mild concussion. And you might think it looked worse when he re-entered the game even after his eyes fluttered at one point as he sat on the bench. Coach Paul Hewitt agreed Thursday, saying that had he seen it, he wouldn't have let Causey play even though he had been cleared to return. He even called Causey's mother Thursday to apologize for playing her son.

Report Offensive CommentHewitt carries himself well in this community (Atlanta) and you don't hear a lot of "incidents" about his players either. Hopefully, he can get some more quality wins as well, if anyone deserves that, it's him.

Report Offensive CommentHere in Georgia, the players are tougher than in Texas or them yankee states.

Report Offensive CommentGood move by Hewitt. If it doesn't work out for Paul at Tech, I know a wonderful school in Queens that will hire him.

Report Offensive CommentThat medical staff should re-visit their protocol for letting someone return to action. Eyes rolling in the back of your head should be taken off that list. That was scary looking. If I were that kids parents, we would have to visit that staff!!

Report Offensive Commenti was watching that game.....when i saw Causey hit his head on the floor, my first thought was 'there's no way he'll be back in the second half'. agree with post above.....they need to follow proper procedures, no matter how badly the player wants to return to the game.

Report Offensive CommentI swear, I think sometimes these articles are written just because the sports guys have nothing better to do. Is this really a sports story worthy of a blog?

Report Offensive CommentThis guy needs to take off his panties and man up. This is basketball...basketball is war. Straighten him up, run the salts under his nose, send him back out there. Its a good thing this kid wasn't a boxer....the Coach Hewitt wouldve done chores around the family's house. Stinkin Nancy boy.

Report Offensive CommentMatt Causey went to my high school's basketball rival, and he has always been a joke to us here at Gainesville.

Report Offensive Commentthanks for that really insightful comment...it really helps to shed some light on the subject of him getting a concussion and then going back in the game.

Report Offensive CommentCausey did that **** to himself... watch the clip at http://blogs.newsobserver.com/accnow/index.php?cat=173/
theres like 5 seconds left, he plays very selfish offense and misses right after blatantly stiffarming jon scheyer out of his way into the ground (shoulda been offensive foul) then jumped in front of paulus' last second desperation shot. Wasn't even hit that hard, but the way he let himself fall made him smack his head. It was his fault. This kid was a joke that night. Obviously he likes attention and appearing to be tough.

Report Offensive Commentit was worse than deron washington flopping on the floor on every possession someone got aggressive with him.
bleedblue42 | 02/29/08, 01:58 PM
Report Offensive CommentHewitt is a classy guy period. Now if he could get some of his players to stay more than one or two years, Tech would be tough.
SoFlaBoy | 02/29/08, 03:30 PM
Report Offensive Commentyou can't be serious?! Duke is world famous for 'flcpping'.......i've seen both Scheyer and Paulus do the same thing to other players numerous times.
ATLfan15 | 02/29/08, 03:32 PM
Report Offensive Commentdude, if you watched the video you woulda saw that he STIFFARMED scheyer, cheaply knocking him out of the way so he could get a clear shotyou cant fake a flop like that
yeah they fake flops what team doesnt? but this concussion was self-inflicted
bleedblue42 | 02/29/08, 04:33 PM
Report Offensive Commenti mean i was baked when i watched the game and even i noticed that
bleedblue42 | 02/29/08, 04:34 PM
Report Offensive Commentive played basketball for a long time, and when you stiffarm someone to get by them its an automatic foul
bleedblue42 | 02/29/08, 04:35 PM
Report Offensive Commenti'm aware of the rules in b'ball, but i wouldn't say it's automatic; you can see the same 'non calls' in almost every game from ACC to PAC 10.
ATLfan15 | 02/29/08, 04:43 PM
Report Offensive Commentyou're right, nothing is automatic in college bball, altho it should be. i see you watched the video, as you're no longer defending causey. you cant fake a flop when ur elbowed in the chest, if you watch it slowly causey switches dribbling hands right when he gets to scheyer just so he can knock him down.
bleedblue42 | 02/29/08, 05:04 PM
Report Offensive Commenti watched the game, not the video. and i wasn't defending Causey in the first place.....just the fact that he should NOT have gone back in the game; that was no good for him or for GT. if the refs called every flop, games would go on for hours b/c every team would be shooting the bonus by the 12:00 mark.
