Masato Yoshii, a former member of the Mets, is in his first season as the pitching coach for the Nippon Ham Fighters in Japan. Now that Japanese players have appeared at every position in Major League Baseball, the intrigue over whether Japanese players can make the transition is over. The six Japanese players in their first major league training camps this season represent the new status quo. But Yoshii, 42, would not mind beginning a new trend. "I'd like to think coaching in Japan is an important learning experience that could lead to a coaching opportunity in MLB," he said.

hahahaha i cant see the day a manager or coach has to talk to his team through a translator

It happens here with soccer coaches (usually Europeans) and American baseball managers (Bobby Valentine and others) and doesn't seem to be a big concern as many Japanese have a working knowledge of English. MLB is a whole different can of worms but I'd like to see it. But even now, translators do accompany managers to the mound to talk to foreign pitchers and I can remember some catchers acting as translators for Cuban pitchers who didn't understand English. May not be as far away from happening as we think.

awc1230: it happens all the time with american coaches and managers in japan. do u think they learn japanese? no, the don't bother, they use a translator. american managers and coaches have had much success in japan, i don't see why the opposite can't happen. sadaharu oh never got a chance to play in MLB but if there is an opening and he wants it, people should give him a chance to manage in the MLB without dismissing it as impossible.

Let's talk about a hot Japanese EXPORT. I'm talking about Kei Igawa and how he should be sent back to Japan as soon as humanly possible, didja hear he gave up a grand slam to a frat boy on Friday?

February 29, 2008  06:31 PM ET

Then again, Johan didn't have the best day either and he's paid slightly higher than Igawa.
