Will Howard's deal hurt baseball?

While the Phillies have kept stiff upper lips following their $3 million arbitration hit, the feeling around baseball is that Ryan Howard bursting through barriers established by Albert Pujols and Carlos Lee and emulsifying existing service time guidelines will lead to the pastime's next major payroll spike. Few clubs will be willing or able to play in that league.

Salaries are gonna keep going up and up...baseball needs to do something about it, but never will...and it's REALLY sad that a DH type player (which is the kind of player Howard is, make no mistake about it), gets that kind of money...in ARBITRATION...

This guy wants Arod $ in Free Agency. I love the guy and love the 50+ HR's he will hit every year, but he isn't worth ARod $. Arod isn't even worth Arod $.

I know players and agents want to get as much money as they can, and there's no way a round it, but I wish these players would realize there's not that big of a difference between a 100 mil and 110 mil contract. Tim Hudson said it best--once you get that high in the contracts, your talking about making sure your grandkid's kids are going to be finacially stable. Players should raelize that this sport isnt just a game, to the dedicated fans atleast.

I didn't compare him to Glavine. I said if he get's around 15 wins that is what Glavine would get you anyway. No where did I say he was comparable to Glavine. But again, I wouldn't expect you to be able to read at an adult level since you are from New York.

Note to Mets management...save some bucks for 2011. You won't be sorry.

Enjoy...by that time he'll be 33 and abuot 40 pounds heavier.

98% of the people who work for a living in this country cannot submit their 'salary demands' to arbitration; most employers do not want some 3rd party determining their costs; consumers cannot submit prices to arbitration. MLB brought this upon itself.

It would be nice, but he'll be too old. Mets should keep Delgado for now, get an up-and-commer, and develop him

just eliminate guaranteed contracts. very simple. worked wonders for the NFL, look at how that league prospers. reason is simple: the owners can't be hijacked by greedy agents and stupid GMs. the top players still make sick money, but if they're cut or not good enough, guess what, they get a $3, 4, 5 million buyout and move on. the franchises are able to stay healthy and make year to year business/personnel decisions that improve the bottom line. it's the absolute best market system in pro sports. MLB, on the other hand, seems to enjoy a near-death spiral every 10-15 years. it's a wonder the league has survived.

Blame the Phillies Mgt for this one. Had they offered slightly more than the benchmark $7.4 million awarded to Pujols, the arbitrator would have likely ruled in their favor. Unfortunately, the GM shot himself in the foot - based on MLB rules, the abitor is forced to pick one offer - no middle ground allowed. The $7 mil offered by the Phills was below market value - He had no choice but to award the 10 mill. Why would Howard have settled prior to going to arbitration??

Sorry, but owners should be ticked off at the Phillies Management for their stupidity.

The league will always survive. Owners pizz and moan about paying fat contracts even though that person is bringing enormous amounts of money to the owners pockets. If they want the chance at winning, they will have to pay.

February 29, 2008  01:09 PM ET

oh poor baseball, having to pay players what they are worth...boohoo. I know it stinks but it looks as though baseball may have to dip into that $6 billion profit they had last season...aww

who is worth 10 mil a year? event that "paltry" sum, who is worth it. What is worth? Value? it can only be understood in the Non-Anti-Trust vacuum that is MLB.
