His team no longer is a lock to get a bye at the Big 12 tournament. The losses continue to mount. First place, well, that seems like ages ago. Now, perhaps we'll really see what Frank Martin is made of. When he was promoted to head coach of the Kansas State men's basketball team, it looked as if Martin hit the jackpot by inheriting a freshman class that included Michael Beasley. But on Saturday night at Allen Fieldhouse, where K-State fell to the Kansas Jayhawks 88-74, what once seemed so promising for Martin has deteriorated in loss after loss after loss after loss. Even though K-State dropped its fourth straight game, falling to 18-10 overall and 8-6 in the Big 12, Beasley said he's got Martin's back.

all beasley wants is player of the year

March 2, 2008  09:57 AM ET

well, that is not what he wants but he'll get it anyway, kid said it himself he wants a title

March 2, 2008  12:16 PM ET

well a title is a total joke and a reach for K state. I still think that Hansbrough is a better candidate for player of the year.

He betta have his coach's back. You see that guy? Looks full-on La Cosa Nostra

ESPN has Beasley's back, and Beasely has Martin's back -- so -- guess Martin is okay. How can Beasley be best player this year when he doesn't play both ends of the court and his team doesn't win? ... that he may or may not be a big star in the NBA, or the first draft pick, does not mean he's the best player in college ball -- NBA doesn't really care about the things that should matter in college ball -- like playing tough defense, staying out of foul trouble, playing hard all the time, stepping up when your team is down ... Hansbrough, Harangody, and Love all stand taller than Beasley ... seems like player of the year should come from top 4 or 5 teams ... who would even follow KState if the ESPN crew hadn't taken it upon themselves to promote him ... earlier it was Gordon & Mayo & Augustine -- but that didn't work out so well ....

Beasley should get some credit for his awesome skills this year...he is constantly topping the stats charts in RPGs and in PPGs....he deserves some sort of recognition.

March 2, 2008  02:11 PM ET

i agree his stats are incredible, but to silverblack's point i do think that POY award should go to a consistently good performer on a top 10 - 5 team.

March 2, 2008  02:16 PM ET

so the Player of the Year only goes to players who are on good teams? It's not Beasley's fault his team isnt on par with him.. what other award will he get? At least the top teams get some recognition and they actually make it to the finals ..etc...all Beasley gets is a bad team with no title...I mean..the guy has mad skills...I just think its unfair to his merits

March 2, 2008  02:27 PM ET

The only way he will have the Coach's back is to come back to K-State next year.

March 2, 2008  04:06 PM ET

so true golffan well said - as for bballer23- wouldn't being on a mediocre team instead of a very good team help your stats?? I seem to think it would, as Hansbrough has to share the ball with very high caliber players, instead of Beasley doing it all himself. Hansbrough is able to put up the very impressive numbers he gets SHARING the basketball.

March 2, 2008  04:33 PM ET

hey bballer23 -- so who forced Beasley to go to KState? ... did he think it was a top5 team? ... or did he maybe pick KState because he knew he could be big fish in little pond? -- why not Georgetown or Connecticut or Memphis or UNC or Maryland or the real Kansas team? ... I agree that Beasley has shooting/scoring skills, but why not then test them against the best? ... individual stats are not -- or shouldn't be -- the sole basis for POY -- otherwise, just look at total points leader and make the award ...

Huggins recruited these kids to K-State, then left for West Virginia. They are talented, but immature. He's not ready for the NBA mentally or emotionally. But I have to say if I had a chance to make that kind of money I would go pro as well.

Hansborough is your standard College BBaller, he's not going anywhere in the NBA.

March 2, 2008  08:36 PM ET

Did anyone else think it was funny when beasley had the ball in the second half, they smacked it out of his hands and it went to a teammate who layed it up? Dickie V went on one of his "what a great pass, what a great kid he is.." rants, then when you see the replay the ball was stripped and Dickie said nothing.

I am a big KU fan. Just wanted to say Beasley is the real deal. He will be the first pick the NBA draft. If he was on any of the top teams they would win the championship.I don't care if he was in the PAC 10,BIG EAST , SEC , ACC, he would still be the best talent in that league. If you don't think he would why would he ever be the 1st pick in the NBA draft, watch and see. And i do not care for him a player. Tyler Hansbrough will probably get player of the year. He is a work horse ,a very good college player . He is way more humble then Beasley. But Beasley can do it all inside and outside. I thought he missed shots against KU he normally makes. He should of had 50.If he worked as hard
as Hansbrough he would be a lot better player but he so talented he doesnt have to. Hansbrough also will get player the year because he is on North Carolinas team not K-states. Beasley is is the better player. If Hansbrough was on K-STATES team and Beasley was on North Carolinas, Hansbrough wouldnt have a chance. And i do not like K-STATE.

"Remember, college Player of the Year has nothing to do with a player's NBA prospects.". Who been the team player? If you look or watch some of the losses K-State has and it looks as if Beasley and walker just stop playing.
He has don't nothing to make the other player any better. When you hear people talk about great players, you hear things like he makes everyone around him play so much better, you don't hear that about him.

March 2, 2008  10:10 PM ET

I never seen Beasley quit playing, maybe Walker. If Beasley wasnt a team player he would be scoring even more points. I do not want to see him next year with Walker playing KU .

March 2, 2008  10:34 PM ET

Beasley should get the award, how many records does the guy have to set. I get tired of people saying that Hansborough should get it because his team wins. Your punishing Beasley for having less athletic teammates, last time I checked the Wooden Award is an individual award...not a team one. Like the Jayhawker above said if Beasley wasn on UNC and Tyler was on K-state no one would be talking about who should get the award because it would be Beasley hands down. Beasley gets the award.

hey BenderInsertGirder -- Hansbrough may or may not make it big in the NBA -- he is not a 'showman' and he is not black -- white guys disappear in the NBA because they lack 'athleticism' and ego-driven 'flair' and their teammates don't help because they want their own attention, stats, minutes and millions -- but he is the most valuable and best overall player in college this year -- a smart ballplayer who 'sees' the entire court, anticipates other teams' passing lanes, is tough as nails, works hard all the time, doesn't quit, plays defense. he won't be an NBA poster boy 'cause he's white and perhaps a little undersized, and the NBA is not looking for another Larry Bird just now -- too busy hyping the Lakers and rehabilitating Kobethewhitewomanlover for the lucrative LA market and touting James and Durant -- but Hansbrough would make a very solid NBA player who is smart enough to help a team win if it plays team ball, like the Spurs.
